GIVE TODAY

Unlocking Memories: The Power of Storytelling at Still Waters

Thanks to a grant from Arts Midwest, we’ve been able to explore new ways to engage with our seniors at Still Waters. Through the power of storytelling, we’ve witnessed a remarkable transformation as seniors tap into their memories and improve communication. We're now offering weekly storytelling sessions at the center, and our guests are truly loving the experience, finding joy and connection through shared stories.

Storytelling is a powerful tool for enhancing brain health, especially for those facing memory challenges. It fosters emotional well-being by sparking long-term memories and encouraging interaction. With the help of experienced storytellers, we aim to support cognitive function and create meaningful connections within our community.

The impact of these sessions has been described as "magical."

We’ve seen a profound transformation in the guests who participate removing the pressure to remember allows them to engage more fully. It makes them feel seen, not just as participants but as active “storytellers.” As one participant shared, “One of the prime benefits of telling family stories is the sense of community it creates.” During each session, our guests take turns contributing to the story. The facilitator guides the process by asking open-ended questions and recording and repeating responses to keep the narrative flowing, fostering a rich and inclusive experience.

Introducing "The Gathering Place" at Still Waters

We are thrilled to announce the transformation of a new space at Still Waters, thanks to the incredible support from ERMCO. Their generosity has made it possible for us to create The Gathering Place, a warm, inviting space designed to be both relaxing and engaging for families, new visitors, and tours. This area will serve as a welcoming environment where we can provide support to families old and new.

At The Gathering Place, we look forward to hosting meetings with new families as they learn about the services we offer, as well as providing a comfortable setting for our current families to gather, relax, and connect. Having a dedicated space where families can feel at ease is so important to us, and we’re anxious to begin using this beautiful new room as a way to foster deeper relationships and better serve our community. Thanks to Ermco, The Gathering Place will soon become a vital part of how we welcome and support all who walk through our doors.

Building Connections in the Community

At Still Waters, community connections are at the heart of what we do. This October, we’re excited to be out and about, engaging with various events to promote the center and build meaningful relationships.

We will be attending the Hancock Chamber, Solana Networking, Brookdale of Carmel Networking, OneZone Chamber of Commerce, the Dementia Friendly Festival, Hancock Wellness Center’s Alzheimer’s event, Healthy Aging Transition Service Community Health Network, the Dementia Friendly Committee CICOA, Solana’s Dementia Presentation, Boomers & Beyond Networking, tabling at Martin University, and even joining Jim Morgan for a podcast.

By participating in these events, we aim to share our mission and continue creating strong connections that benefit our seniors and their families.

For us, community connections are more than just attending events—they’re about creating lasting partnerships that help us better serve our seniors and their families. We believe in the power of collaboration, and being visible in the community helps us foster new relationships and raise awareness of the valuable services we offer. Stay tuned to see where we'll be next, and come say hello when you see us out in the community!

A Harvest of Vegetables and Friendships

As summer comes to a close, we are finishing up the harvesting from our garden, which has not only provided us with plentiful vegetables but has also cultivated new friendships and community connections. This summer, our garden space became so much more than just a garden—it became a place for laughter, memory-making, and building relationships.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of the local Boy Scouts, Metro Ministries, Shamrock Garden Club, and the Master Gardeners, we were able to expand our garden this year. It has been a joy to watch our guests’ families engaging with members of the garden club, asking for tips on how to grow their tomatoes, identifying new vegetables, and sharing gardening stories. Our garden has truly grown into a space of learning, connection, and fun for everyone involved.

Exploring Nutrition and Healthy Eating

We’ve been having so much fun learning about healthy eating from the talented students of IU Indianapolis Masters of Science and Dietetics program! This month, we are thrilled to continue welcoming these students as they engage with our guests on the importance of balanced nutrition, with a focus on specific diets like the MIND diet. The students have created delicious snacks, fun sides and desserts to accompany our lunches and have given interactive presentations that make healthy eating both educational and enjoyable.

Healthy eating is essential for seniors, as it plays a significant role in maintaining overall well-being, cognitive function, and vitality. Diets rich in nutrients support heart health, promote brain function, and help manage or prevent chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The MIND diet, which combines elements of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, has been shown to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease by emphasizing foods that support brain health, such as leafy greens, berries, nuts, and whole grains. By introducing our guests to these concepts through engaging activities and delicious food, we aim to promote healthier lifestyles and ensure they have the knowledge to make nutritious choices.

We are excited to continue collaborating with IU’s dietetic students, who bring fresh perspectives and creative ideas to our center. Their involvement not only enhances our lunch and snack program but also empowers our seniors with the tools they need to prioritize their health in a way that is both fun and accessible.
