MAY HAPPENINGS

Dear Friends,

While it has been almost a month since April 8, I think most of us are still basking in the glow of our eclipse experiences, when those of us fortunate enough to witness it felt that incredible sense of awe and wonder as the cold air blew in, the sky turned a deep indigo blue, and we saw that sparkling ring in the sky. I keep asking myself, "Did I really see what I think I saw?" It was all so fleeting and ephemeral that it in fact feels like a dream.

Also fleeting and ephemeral are our favorite spring time flowers! Daffodils are springing up all around us--thank goodness the deer stay away from them! The tulips in our floral tunnel are shockingly beautiful, but we will only have them for another week or two, so stop by for a bouquet while you can! Ann has hardened off the pansies and they have finally left the greenhouses and are out for sale in front of the shop, cheerily nodding their heads on these cool spring days until they begin to wilt and fade when the heat of summer arrives.

We hope you will join us some time over Mother's Day weekend! We will be having a wine tasting on Saturday May 11 when we will be featuring wines produced by women winemakers, and on Sunday we will be repeating our Mother's Day Potting event which was so successful last year (read more below).

Finally, we will be starting our spring/summer hours on May 6 when we open at 9AM Mondays through Saturdays.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Wine Tasting!

Saturday May 11 3:30-6:00

Join us for a special wine tasting where, in honor of Mother's Day, we will be sampling wines produced by women winemakers! These are lovely wines with wonderful stories, and we can't wait to share them with you! The tasting is free, and any wines purchased will have a 10% discount.

Mother's Day Potting Event!

Sunday, May 12, 11-3 (appt only)

Bring your Mom (or your child, sister, aunt or friend!) to walk our three greenhouses and create a custom planter! Once we have helped you choose and design the planter, we will assist you in planting it up and you can take it home. Price is $55 and you must reserve in advance. Call us at 518-576-9043 to register.

Spring Planting Advice from Ann

Everyone is eager to plant and get their gardens going, but it is important to be patient and only plant what can tolerate these cool spring temperatures. So what can you plant now? We have hardened off our pansies as well as some cool weather vegetables such as spinach, onions, and peas, so they are good to go! Brassicas such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and cabbage are also OK to plant outside now (although ours are not hardened off quite yet). If you have seeded some veggies on your own, make sure you harden them off yourself before planting them outside. You can bring them out every day to acclimate them to outdoor conditions and then bring them back inside at night. After 5 to 7 days they will be ready to plant outside. You are also OK planting cool weather vegetable seeds directly into the soil now. What about everything else, like tomatoes, peppers, and the beautiful annual flowers we are so excited to see? Hold back until early June when we are beyond our last frost date! If you really can't wait, start with planters and hanging baskets that you can easily bring inside (or at least cover them with a sheet) if the weather report looks like frosty weather. Perennial flowers and shrubs are a different story. Our current stock was over-wintered so they are ready to be planted now, and we will be receiving our first big order of perennials, shrubs and trees later in May. The best thing you can do now is focus on amending your garden soils with nutrient rich compost.

Floral Bouquet CSA

Consider becoming a member of the Floral Bouquet CSA or gifting it to Mom for Mother's Day! We offer memberships that allow you to pick up a bouquet every week during the season, every other week, once a month, or weekly (5 bouquets) during the month of either July or August. I gave my mother a 5 week membership last summer and she loved it! Give us a call at 518 576-9043 or go to the link on our website below.

Tulips!

We are still harvesting tulips but stop by soon as their season (in our floral tunnel at least!) will be ending soon! We have 1/2 dozen and dozen bouquets pre-made, or you can design your own. 1/2 dozen is $14 and a full dozen is $22.

Whiskey Barrel Planters from Gristmill Distillers!

Gristmill Distillers, producers of our local favorite Blackfly Whiskey, has turned their old whiskey barrels into flower planters! How cool is that?! We currently have three sizes for sale.

Pruning Paniculata Hydrangeas

If you have paniculata hydrangeas, now is the time to prune them! Because these hydrangeas bloom on summer growth, the buds have not set yet (lilacs, on the other hand, bloom on old growth, so don't prune them until after they have finished blooming later this spring). Leah recommends that you start by pruning crossing or rubbing branches, and then you can prune back significantly! Make sure you prune right above the node where the new growth will form. Look at Leah's before and after pics as well as the glorious blooms later in the summer after pruning!

Landscaping and Maintenance

If you would like us to do any landscaping for you this season, please get in touch with Leah at leah@eastbranchorganics.com as soon as possible as she is already booking well into the summer. Below you will also find a link to an online form you can fill out and Leah will get back to you.

What's New in the Wine & Spirit Shop?

We have been busy tasting lots of wines and spirits over the past few months and we are starting to bring the "winners" into the shop! Come to our tasting on May 11 to sample some of them, and we will continue wine tastings throughout the summer. Here are some of our newest bottles.

Domaine de L’Enchantoir Saumur Blanc

Terres Blanches

A group of us tasted this Saumur Blanc and three people with three different palates all fell in love! It is a delicious Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley, but a little more affordable than the most famous Loire Valley Chenin Blanc: Vouvray. With notes of nectarine, meyer lemon, and fresh pear, it has a raciness while simultaneously having some nice texture. I found my white wine of summer 2024!

Weingut Furst

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc from Germany? Yes indeed! Think of this as New Zealand meets the Loire Valley! Furst Sauvignon Blanc has Sauvignon Blanc's signature notes of grapefruit and cut grass, but as is typical of cooler climate Sauvignon Blancs like Sancerre, this Mosel Sauv Blanc has a little sweet grace note at the end and a lower ABV of 12%. Aren't you curious?

Red Apertivo Bitters

by Forthave Spirits

We are so excited to have an organic and New York State produced alternative to Campari! This bitter includes 13 organic-certified botanicals featuring bitter orange, gentian, chamomile, and rose, and its 100% natural, plant-based coloring is derived from black carrots and hibiscus rather than artificial red colorants. Perfect for a negroni, a Spritz with Prosecco, or just on ice and topped with soda water. Cin Cin!

Whitman Brewing

A Simple Dream

Dry-Hopped Saison

We had such beautiful warm and sunny afternoon for our Whitman Brewing Tasting last week! We have a number of Whitman beers left on the shelves, including A Simple Dream which is a dry-hopped Farmhouse Ale /Saison. This is a lovely light beer with floral notes and suggestions of white wine provided by the Nelson hops.

Tilted Barn

Lawn Boy Barn Lager

Located in an authentic, New England-style post and beam barn, Tilted Barn is Rhode Island's first farm brewery. Lawn Boy is their "Barn Lager" (House Lager)--light, crisp, refreshing, and unfiltered.

Grimm Artisanal Ales

Beauty is a Rare Thing IPA

Hopped with Luminosa and Motueka hops, both of which are known for delectable citrus flavors, Beauty is a Rare Thing is soft, fluffy, luminous and delicious!

Once again, Grimm was named NY State Brewery of the year for 2024.
