Be Present, Be Powerful!
Creating a school environment that fosters a sense of belonging -- so children feel safe, supported, connected and engaged -- helps students to learn. A special report in Education Week, developed with Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University, explores how schools are harnessing strong student relationships to cultivate a positive climate.
The report includes case studies of two high schools and two school districts that show how they are putting student connectedness at the center of their improvement efforts.
Keep enthusiasm for school high as the academic year winds down. We love this very brief video from Montgomery County Public Schools that encourages students to “make a supercharged promise -- let's pledge to be school superheroes!”

Attendance Tool Spotlight
Reducing chronic absence takes a yearlong approach. Before the school year ends, make sure that your school or district has a plan for improving attendance for the coming year. See these planning resources.
This is a good time to meet with community partners and agree on activities for the fall. Pass out talking points that everyone -- schools, public agencies, community organizations, faith-based institutions, elected officials, businesses and families -- can use to help spread the word during the first month of school and throughout the year.
Encourage local health care providers to share information about attendance during upcoming back-to-school checkups. See our tools for health providers.
Start planning now to launch a student poster contest or video contest, with winning entries to be displayed during September or the start of school. Check out these examples:

District Leadership PD
Superintendents! Would you like to boost your district administrator's ability to build better systems to improve engagement and attendance? Families in five Texas school districts who participated in a Home Visit Project in the 2019-20 school year saw a reduction in students’ chronic absenteeism, particularly among early elementary students. The program improved teachers’ connections with students and families and students’ engagement and achievement, according to Home Visit Project 2021 Impact Analysis Report.
Dozens of high schools have made relationships central to their improvement efforts using BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) a strength-based approach that aims to boost achievement for all students by improving a school’s effectiveness at building relationships, leveraging real-time data and capitalizing on the strengths of each student. Read the evaluation report.
