WesternU College of Health Sciences-Northwest welcomes new class of physical therapy students

WesternU CHS-Northwest celebrated the start of the new academic school year with the annual white coat ceremony held at the Lebanon First Assembly Church in Lebanon, Oregon on Friday, Aug. 2, 2024.

The white coat symbolizes a commitment to care for patients and signifies a student’s official entrance into the health care professions. Celebrating this fresh start is a rite of passage for WesternU students beginning their graduate education.

However, CHS-Northwest students have already dipped their toes into their Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, as classes began a few weeks ago.

“The relationships that have started to form between faculty and students have made the learning experience both enjoyable and effective,” said Oregon native and DPT student Miguel Andalon-Ordaz. “The collaborative environment has fostered my growth both as an individual and a future professional.”

WesternU COMP Professor Vishwanath Venketaraman, PhD, received a three-year, $429,000 grant (2R15HL143545-02) from the National Institutes of Health National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

The grant is funding Dr. Venketaraman’s research into the potential effect of glutathione in improving immune responses against mycobacterial tuberculosis (TB), which causes TB, and how it protects against TB meningitis. The funding also provides opportunities for Venketaraman to mentor WesternU students as they learn about conducting research and publishing their findings.

Dr. Venketaraman’s research team will work with Dr. Kabirullah Lutfy (Co-Investigator) in the College of Pharmacy to accomplish the studies proposed in the grant. COMP students Arshavir Karapetyan, Ami Patel, Lannhi Nguyen, Kayvan Sasaninia, Nickolas Yedgarian (pictured above with Dr. Venketaraman) and Cristian Sy are working with Dr. Lutfy to establish a standardization protocol for the TB meningitis study.
