Renovations beginning for children, youth space

Major improvements of our second-floor Sunday School, nursery, and middle/high school rooms are about to begin. The trustees and the Youth & Children Ministries Committee have been working together for months to develop plans for this important renovation project, which is aimed at transforming these learning areas into even more welcoming and enriching environments for our youngest members.

Renderings of the planned changes (such as those that appear with this article) and samples of paint, flooring, and more will be available soon in the parlor.

Alb Construction Co. expects to begin work next Monday, Aug. 5 and should take about 90 days. YCM hopes that children will be able to use the new space by mid-November.

The four Sunday School rooms on the second floor and the workroom area outside Emily Bianchi’s office will be the focus of the renovation, which will begin with a complete tear-out of the space. The middle school and high school rooms at the west end of the building and the nursery near the sanctuary will receive new paint, wallpaper, furniture, lighting, and new cabinetry.

Most of the second floor will be closed for the duration, including the Wesley Room which will not be available for any meetings until the project is concluded. Contact Kristyn Walker if you need assistance finding an appropriate location for your meetings/studies.

During the summer, Sunday School classes will be held outdoors. YCM is still trying to determine where those classes will be held in the fall.

Here are some of the updates and enhancements you can look forward to:

New Flooring: Fresh, durable flooring that enhances safety and comfort.

Ceilings and Lighting: Improved ceilings and upgraded lighting for a brighter and more inviting atmosphere.

Organization and Cabinets: Enhanced storage solutions and organized spaces to better serve our activities and materials.

Furniture and Toys: New, age-appropriate furniture and toys to facilitate learning and play.

Play Space: Expanded and redesigned play areas for active engagement and creativity.

Supplies: Updated supplies to support our curriculum and activities.

These renovations are designed not only to enhance the physical space but also to create an environment where our children can grow in faith, learn, and have fun in a safe and nurturing setting.

During this time, we kindly ask for your understanding and patience with any temporary inconveniences that may arise. We are confident that these improvements will have a lasting positive impact on our children and families for years to come.

This week, YCM needs your help to pack up the classrooms and furniture in preparation for the construction. If you are able, please help with this important task, beginning at 6 pm on Wednesday, and Thursday. If you have boxes that would be appropriate for this purpose, please bring those along!

Cleaning the basement floors

Starting on Monday, Aug. 5, several areas in the basement will be closed for a few days to accommodate the annual work to clean and wax the floors. Pete’s Expert Cleaning will be stripping, cleaning, and waxing the floors.

The rooms that will be closed are: the Fellowship Hall Annex (GP Co-Op Room), basement corridor (from elevator to sanctuary stairway), basement classrooms and sanctuary stair from the basement to the second floor.

The Trustees expect the work to be done and the rooms available for use by Thursday, Aug. 8.

Thanks to the Trustees for their devotion to caring for the physical property that is our church!

Happy birthday to Doug Dykstra!

Please pause today to celebrate the birthday of GPUMC's organist, Doug Dykstra!

Thanks for the backpack love!

You came through in a big way to help fill backpacks for children at the Methodist Children's Home.

Ashley Deeb reports that we set a new collection record this year by providing 76 backpacks and enough supplies to fill 60+ bags!

Thanks for all for your support for this important annual project!

A new way to support the food pantry

Leslie Rutland-Tipton has put together an Amazon wish list for food items requested by Immanuel United Methodist Church’s food pantry. This means that you can order food directly from her list and have it delivered to her home. She will make arrangements to get the food delivered to Immanuel.

A big advantage: You can shop in the privacy of your home and avoid the possibility of forgetting to add food pantry items to your cart when you’re doing your own grocery shopping!

To support the food pantry, you can also:

  • Donate canned goods and other non-perishable items in the box in the Activity Entrance or by leaving them on the porch at 86 Willow Tree Place, GP Shores.

  • Make your own cash donation to Immanuel, either as a one-time donation or through a recurring payment. Follow this link to set up an account for that purpose.

  • Buy a gift card to Meijer or Kroger valued at $50, $100, or more. Deliver those directly to Paul or Beth Blunden.

However you choose to support this important mission, THANK YOU!
