UPCOMING EVENTS

IN THE NEWS

The City of Vaughan announced new cycling facilities coming to Jane Street thanks to a $9.6-million contribution from the Government of Canada’s Active Transportation Fund. York Region has also committed $3.2 million in funding towards this project, known as the Jane Street Uptown Link. The total project cost is $16 million, which includes the City’s contribution of $3.2 million.

Once complete, the Jane Street Uptown Link will include eight kilometres of new in-boulevard cycle tracks (designated spaces for bike riders separated from those walking or driving that are marked with a bicycle symbol, arrow and diamond), four kilometres of new sidewalks and four kilometres of streetlight enhancements along Jane Street, from Highway 7 to Teston Road.

I had the honour to present the Key to the City of Vaughan to legendary tenor Andrea Bocelli. For more than 30 years, Andrea’s angelic voice has touched hearts and moved spirits, with his 15 solo albums selling more than 70 million records worldwide. His humanitarian work is focused on empowering people and communities in poverty, illiteracy and distress by promoting and supporting projects that overcome these barriers and drive people toward their full potential. He is a well-deserving recipient of this prestigious honour.

The City of Vaughan continues to prioritize public safety for everyone who lives in, works in and visits Vaughan. Unauthorized car rallies are disruptive to everyone’s quality of life and pose a significant risk to the community. These events often come with excessive noise, speeding, stunt driving and blocking or impeding motor or pedestrian traffic.

Unauthorized car rallies typically involve people gathering with their modified vehicles to do stunts, and taking over private property, like parking lots, or roads. These events do not have a permit or permission from the City to take place.

The City, in collaboration with York Regional Police and the Insurance Bureau of Canada, held a press conference at the #4 District Headquarters with myself and Police Chief Jim MacSween to announce amendments to Vaughan’s Special Events By-law (PDF) and Noise By-law (PDF) to prohibit any participation in unauthorized car rallies.

At Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, Ontario Premier Doug Ford officially announced the approval and funding of York University’s School of Medicine, located in the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct (VHCP). When ready, this new School of Medicine will help address the doctor shortage in our community.

The partnership between the City of Vaughan, York University, Mackenzie Health and ventureLAB envisions the VHCP as a magnet for excellence in health research, education, commercialization and more. Vaughan is well on its way to becoming a world-class health innovation destination.
