DID YOU KNOW...

9/14

Another way to stop military expansion: a massive alligator on the tarmac under a plane. It actually happened at MacDill Airforce Base in Florida on April 22nd. Unfortunately Florida Fish and Wildlife officers, after a long struggle, did manage to relocate it.

A project of CALC

This project seeks to define how militarism,

racism and climate crisis are interconnected.

The project will document how national security is not rooted in militarism but rather

in the meeting of human needs such as health, education, good jobs,

good infrastructure and a livable climate.

Planet Versus Pentagon

is now sponsoring weekly vigils calling for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.

Please join us for a vigil calling for diplomacy and an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.

Old Federal Building

corner of 7th & Pearl, Eugene

Some signs will be provided. Bring your own if you can.

We abhor all violence. We are heartbroken by the killing and maiming of people in the Middle East, whether they are Palestinian, Israeli, or citizens of any other country, particularly innocent children, people with disabilities and the elderly.

We call for an immediate ceasefire and a stop to the killing or injuring or any type of violence to anyone. We demand sending humanitarian aid to the civilians affected, and demand members of Congress not send more military aid. Diplomacy not weapons is needed in the Middle East. Only the weapons manufacturers and oil industry benefit from war. The Military Industrial Congressional Complex has the biggest carbon footprint in the world.

In peace,

¡Apoya Unión de Activistas (UdA)!

"Those four years taught me about the strength of our communities and the power our voices hold. Unión de Activistas was a safe haven for me."

-- Anahí, UdA graduate

As Anahí’s statement above reflects, Unión de Activistas provides a safe haven for students. Regenerating social connections and backing youth is more important than ever.

Given the increased requests we have been receiving to support students and families, we know this is not enough. A donor has backed UdA with an amazing $10,000 gift! Your generous contribution would allow us to build on this support and expand the hours of the UdA position. Additional staff hours would include professional development and time to coordinate the Radio Juventud Youth Radio Project.

Please use our donation page [www.nfggive.org/donation/93-0691194] to help fund UdA.

May Day - A Day of International Solidarity

Blog Excerpt

On this May Day, a day historically dedicated to celebrating workers' rights and labor movements worldwide, the echoes of solidarity reverberate across the globe, intertwining with the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and the fervent protests unfolding on university campuses throughout the United States. The significance of May Day lies not only in its commemoration of the struggles of the labor movement but also in its resonance with broader social justice movements. In Gaza, where the ravages of war continue to devastate communities, the spirit of resistance against oppression and occupation embodies the essence of the May Day ethos.

Simultaneously, across the US, university campuses have become arenas of protest and inspiration, as students rally against systemic injustices, including issues of racial inequality, economic disparity, and the perpetuation of violence both at home and abroad. The solidarity between these movements underscores a shared commitment to challenging oppressive structures and advocating for a more just and equitable society. As people take to the streets and campuses, May Day serves as a poignant reminder of the power of collective action in the pursuit of justice and liberation for all.

This is the Earth Day edition of the

CALC Calendar

Listed below are the events in the calendar addressing the climate crisis, sent to us by local organization. We offer these as opportunities for you to become educated and activated to help save the Earth... and this not hyperbolic.

  • Apr. 19: Film screening, BURNED - Are Trees the New Coal?
  • Apr. 20: Electric Vehicle Show
  • Apr. 21: Kentucky Falls Earth Day Hike
  • Apr. 22: Children's Earth Day Art Contest
  • Apr. 26: Bioregional Regeneration movement

  • May 11: In the Sacred Grove: Writing Our Relationship With Trees

-editor

We all want clean air. We all want clean water.

We all want to leave our children a stable

climate future. The solutions are here.

In this, our decade for climate action, the transition to clean energy is happening. But will it be a just transition and will it be in time?

There has been an explosion of groups working on climate solutions, and we are now in the midst of a massive market shift to high-efficiency, zero-emission electric technologies and away from fossil fuels. These changes will stabilize energy bills, improve health, and cut climate pollution amid extreme weather challenges.

We need BIG SYSTEM CHANGES. The Inflation Reduction Act is not the silver bullet, but it's the strongest climate policy we have. (A no-brainer in the face of record-setting heat and looming tipping points.).

What can one person alone do? As Professor and writer, Kathleen Dean Moore says, “Stop being just one person.” Find your group. Connect and learn with others. We can do this.

Two incumbent Lane County commissioners are being challenged in the May 21st election:

Position 3, South Eugene, Commissioner Laurie Trieger, is being challenged by

Grace Widdicombe.

Position 4, North Eugene Commissioner, Pat Farr, Sr. is being challenged by Zach Mulholland.

Although it is a “primary election,” if a candidate gets over 50% of the vote they are declared the winner, and there will be no election for that race in November. Now is the time to learn what these candidates think, prior to casting your ballot.

Sorry - no lunch available this week!

Event web page:

www.cityclubofeugene.org/forum/viticulture-in-the-valley-the-wine-economy-of-eugene

In 2022, the Southern Willamette Valley was home to over 5,000 acres of planted vineyards, producing nearly 17,000 pounds of wine grapes. In Lane County alone, the estimated economic impact of the industry exceeded $165 million and accounted for more than 1,000 jobs.

Eugene is at the heart of the Southern Willamette Valley’s wine industry and we’re honored to welcome an expert panel of local and statewide leaders to discuss this growing part of our economy.

Speakers:

Justin King formally joined King Estate Winery in 2011 as its Northeast Regional Sales Manager, based in New York. In 2017, after returning to Oregon, he became King Estate’s National Sales Manager and currently leads a team of regional and state sales managers nationwide.

Morgen McLaughlin is the Executive Director of the Willamette Valley Wineries Association (WVWA). The WVWA is an Oregon-based non-profit wine trade association whose mission is to promote, preserve, and advance the prestige of Oregon’s Willamette Valley AVA and its wines through the support of its members, community, and environment.

Aaron Schwartz is the owner of Julian Sinclair, a Eugene based wine importer and distributor. He started the operation from the basement of his house in 2015 and with some hard work, good luck, and great employees.

Currently, Apokalypsis (formerly Rise Up Rooted) is offering

three “Me and White Supremacy” learning groups for spring of 2024,

one in-person (with dinner) and two virtual options.

We continue to offer these learning groups because they provide a unique opportunity for white-bodied and white-presenting folks to not only get clearer understandings of phenomena like tone policing, white exceptionalism, and white superiority, but to self-reflect on how these show up in themselves. By becoming more aware of how these live in us allows space to choose a different way of being.

We also bring additional resources, tools, and somatic support to help work through shame and grief, as well as some added understanding on what makes white supremacy unique, and the ways it shows up in everyday contexts (including in activist spaces). This is challenging, rich, life-changing work.

In-person offering (includes dinner): 5:30-7:30pm; April 13, 20, 27; May 4, 11

Virtual offering: 9-10:30am PST; May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

Virtual offering: 12-1:30pm PST; May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

In the Sacred Grove: Writing Our Relationship With Trees

Gathering facilitated by

Brian “Bragi” Sunset

Saturday, May 11 m 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Campbell Community Center

155 High St., Eugene

It’s the cedar - the mother of lingonberry - that is my tree… From “My Tree,” by Rolf Jacobsen

Ask most people to name a tree with whom they feel connected—a tree they planted as a child, a tree growing in a park near where they live, or perhaps a mythic tree, such as the World Tree—and you get a rich response.

You can probably think of your own tree. One for you who is more than just some scientific name and with whom you share a heartfelt connection. Which tree would it be?

Although it may seem far-fetched to some, for many people historically the notion that you can relate to trees is as natural as the ocean ebbing and flowing. Perhaps it is natural for you too?

Then let us gather in the sacred grove to express that truth we have always known: Our intimate relationship with Trees. Our medium for this exchange will be poetry and journaling, with optional sharing.

Brian “Bragi” Sunset is a native Oregonian raised in the Willamette Valley. He holds an MA in Transformative Language Arts and is a board-certified Holistic Healthcare Practitioner. Brian’s 20-plus years of experience includes working with individuals and groups in a variety of settings including hospitals, community groups, mental health treatment centers, summer camps, and jails. Brian is currently exploring the ways in which journal writing activates flow, moves energy, and promotes mental, spiritual, and physical health. In his spare time, he enjoys walking, playing music, and stargazing.

THE JANES

Documentary

Thursday, May 16; m 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Art House, 492 E. 13th Ave, Eugene

Admission is free, but this film is expected to sell out so

we encourage you to reserve a ticket in advance.

In the spring of 1972, police raided an apartment on the South Side of Chicago – arresting and charging seven women who were part of a clandestine network. Using code names, fronts, and safe houses to protect their identities and their work, they built an underground service for women seeking safe, affordable abortions in the pre-Roe v. Wade era – a time when abortion was a crime in most states, and even circulating information about abortion was a felony in Illinois. They called themselves “Jane.”

Oscar-nominated Tia Lessin and Emmy-nominated Emma Pildes’ revelatory documentary could not be more timely – The Janes offers first-hand accounts from the women at the center of the group, many speaking on the record for the first time. This galvanizing documentary tells the story of our past and, potentially, our future.

Following the film will be a Q&A on Zoom with Judith Arcana, an original “Jane”.

Celebrating 10 Years of

Marriage Equality in Oregon

The “Freedom to Marry” in Oregon was established on May 19, 2014, in U.S. District Court Judge Michael McShane’s Order in the Rummell and Geiger cases. Join us in commemorating the 10th anniversary of this historic ruling.

Friday May 17, m 1 - 4 pm

Harris Hall, 125 East 8th Ave, Eugene

Doors will open at 1 pm

Speakers will begin at 1:30 pm,

keynote remarks by Judge McShane and other leaders

The aim of this event is to celebrate access to justice and highlight the importance of ensuring all individuals, regardless of socio-economic status, cultural heritage, or family composition, have equal opportunities to participate in marriage ceremonies recognized and protected by the law.

In addition, Judges at the Lane County Courthouse are generously volunteering their time to officiate free wedding ceremonies for couples from diverse backgrounds, and who might otherwise face economic hardship or other barriers to accessing this service.

Pre-registered couples wishing to exchange or renew vows will then go with judges for individual wedding ceremonies. Ceremonies will take place in individual courtrooms. After the wedding ceremonies, a cake and beverage reception to toast the couples and their guests will conclude the event, from 3:30-4:00.

If you would like to exchange vows and participate in a wedding ceremony (or renew vows) as part of this celebration please contact Sascha Cosio to sign up at sascha.cosio@gmail.com on or before April 30.

This project is being made possible through collaboration with the Lane County Circuit Court; Lane County Commissioner and Board Chair Laurie Trieger; and The Office of the Lane County Clerk; along with groups from the local legal community and area nonprofit organizations.

A Call for Co-Sponsors

We are seeking co-sponsors to support a benefit concert for Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN) featuring Tish Hinojosa, a singer-songwriter from Austin, Texas. This event will be in conjunction with the ongoing “Farm Worker Rights Movement and Eugene Friends of the Farm Workers, 1972-76” exhibit at the Lane County History Museum, next door to the Convention Center.

PINEROS Y CAMPESINOS UNIDOS DEL NOROESTE (PCUN Farmworkers Union) is based in Woodburn, the center of Oregon’s agricultural industry. It is the largest Latino organization in the state, with more than 6,000 members, 98% of whom are Mexican and Central American immigrants. Founded in 1985, its fundamental goal is to empower farmworkers to understand and take action against systematic exploitation and all of its effects.

TISH HINOJOSA is a longtime supporter of Farm Worker Rights, and last gave a benefit concert for PCUN in Eugene 2017. The youngest of 13 children born to Mexican immigrant parents, she has dedicated her career to playing music from the southwest. To learn about Tish: www.mundotish.com/about.

For more information on these co-sponsorship options, please contact Nancy Bray: braynj@gmail.com.

Co-sponsors will be listed in all publicity for the event, and we would appreciate your help in getting the word out as we get closer to the event.

Thank you for considering our request to support the PCUN benefit concert. We look forward to hearing back from you. It would help our planning if you could get back to us by May 1.

At the Salem Peace Lecture featuring Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis in October, a question was asked about where one could find examples of nonviolence being used effectively for social change in today's world.

In response, I promised to send out a link to "Nonviolence News," a publication edited by novelist/activist Rivera Sun. Bystander/Upstander Training

- Hosting Opportunity -

If you know of an organization (church, non profit, social action) that might be

interested in hosting a Bystander/Upstander Intervention Zoom workshop,

we are available to provide these trainings.

In brief, the workshops train participants to be ready to respond if they observe someone being bullied or harassed. If you know of an organization that might like to host a training, contact Judy Boles, judy.boles@comcast.net, 541-285-0242.

Here's the text from the promotional flyer:

Bystander/Upstander Intervention Zoom Workshop

PUSH BACK AGAINST HATE!

Learn and practice how to intervene when someone is being harassed in a hateful way-without escalating the situation. These workshops include lecture, video, demonstration, and breakout room scenarios. Experienced teachers lead this training where you will learn and practice several ways to effectively support a person who is being bullied. Some of the skills you will learn about and practice include:

  • Being an active witness
  • How to engage with and support the targeted person
  • Ways to distract the harasser
  • How to involve others who can help
  • De-escalating the situation
  • The necessity of and strategies for “after-care”
  • Broader involvement in work for social justice
