SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JOIN US FOR MASS THIS WEEKEND

Saturday at 5:00pm

Sunday at 9:00am

Sunday at 11:00am

READINGS FOR THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PRACTICE OF CHARITY

In the Second Book of Kings, Elisha feeds a hundred people with just twenty barley loaves; in the Gospel, Jesus feeds five thousand with five barley loaves and two fish. Both stories tell us that there are leftovers from the abundance of food. This physical nourishment is paired with need for spiritual nourishment: Elisha's servant and Philip and Andrew all doubt that the Lord will provide and answer all their needs.

  • In your prayer today, reflect on when you have doubted how the Lord "[satisfies] the desire of every living thing" (Psalm 145:16). Ask the Lord to help you see how God has provided in abundance.
  • Learn about the seven corporal works of mercy.
  • Focus on one corporal work of mercy. How can you give of yourself and work with God to feed others?

We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.

Live Stream Mass is on Sundays at 9:00am.

WELCOME FR. BRAD AND FR. VAL!

Please exit through the narthex after Mass to introduce yourself and greet Fr. Brad and Fr. Val. They are both excited to get to know the SJV community.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

WOMEN'S RETREAT

Thank you to all the women of the parish who sacrificed leaving family and work to attend the retreat. It was a beautiful weekend to gather and praise God and grow in community! Thanks to Patricia Wuertzer and Laura Stanger for being ever thoughtful in all the little details they put into the retreat.

"As usual our Women’s Retreat was outstanding thanks to Laura and Patricia. We left full of grace and looking forward to next year." - Marie C.

"For the past year I have been trying to attend a women’s retreat, but life got in the way, or I did not have the courage to do so. I was afraid of leaving my family behind and of being vulnerable to strangers. But when I heard about the retreat and Rosario invited me, I felt a tug in my heart. God was calling me to take a break from my busy life and to spend some time with Him and with other women who share my faith. I decided to sign up, trusting that God would provide for my needs and those of my family.

The retreat was more than I could have imagined. It started with a ferry ride to a beautiful cabin overlooking the water, where serenity surrounded us. We were welcomed by Laura and Patricia, who were warm and friendly. They gave us an overview of the retreat program, which included prayer, worship, reflection, sharing, and fun activities. We were divided into small groups, where we got to know each other and formed bonds of sisterhood and learned more about embracing God’s grace. We also had free time, where we could get to know each other more, swim in Grace in the Hood Canal or for some of us just feel the Hood Canal water to our knees, journal, meditate, or just enjoy nature.

I learned so much from the talks, the testimonies, and the conversations with other women. I realized that I was not alone in my struggles, my fears, and my hopes. I felt God's presence and love in a powerful way. I was challenged to grow in my faith, to trust in God more, and to serve Him better.

I felt refreshed, renewed, and empowered. I felt a deeper connection with God, with myself, and with other women. I felt grateful for the chance to attend the retreat and for the sacrifices my family made to support me. I would highly recommend the women's retreat to anyone who is looking for a spiritual boost, a time of fellowship, and a chance to grow. It is a gift that you can give to yourself and to God.

Thank you Laura and Patricia for putting together this great retreat." - Consuelo C.

"This was the second Women's retreat for me! I wasn't really sure about this year's retreat as I have been battling some mild depression & wasn't sure I was in the right mind set for a retreat.

When I got to the retreat house & opened up our packet & saw some of the prayers/songs etc...I thought OH NO! This is going to be too much for me, this is going to make me too emotional, how am I going to hold it together? But the beauty of the retreat is I didn't need to "hold it together," It was ok to be vulnerable & fall apart & the theme of the weekend just fell so in line with that.

I'm coming to find out that these retreats are a safe place to be our true selves, the masks we wear trying to hold it all together we can leave at the door. Laura & Patricia do a beautiful job of creating this safe loving place for all of us. ❤️

We are all beautifully broken." 💔 - Dana W.

"It was great connecting with old friends and just as great connecting with new friends. As always, there was a perfect balance of group time, alone time, and social time." - Marti B.

"I always know this retreat is going to be a blessing—and this year my heart once again is filled to overflowing. We didn't just LEARN about Grace—we LIVED Grace. We swam in it, and we put the broken parts of our wounded selves back together with God's Grace (along with a little epoxy and gold dust!) We laughed together, and cried together, sharing in the warm, trusting environment that Patricia and Laura created for us, as they responded in Grace to put together this amazing Retreat Weekend." - Peggy A.

"We were all connected to GRACE and with each other for the weekend. I loved the experience of feeling that grace, community, and love. SJV helps our community to live in that Grace. Laura you walk that talk every day - not with talk but you, your actions need no talk. Patricia thank you. I so appreciate the many hours you two have spent making this happen." - Jeannie D.

MEN'S RETREAT

Thank you to the men of the parish who participated in the Men's Retreat. Your presence truly added value to the experience for everyone involved. Thank you to Ron Petrusha and Brian Fink for your commitment and enthusiasm to help put the retreat together. We're excited to continue fostering a dynamic community of men in our parish.

"This was my first retreat in years, and I got to know more men in the parish and had a great time." - Tony V.

This year’s men’s retreat at the St. Andrew’s House in Union Washington was, again, special to me.

Yes, the weather was fantastic and the views from the retreat house porch as breathtaking as ever, but this is also the year when we began all the changes related to “Partners in the Gospel.” So, we had no priest accompanying us.

Our leaders Ron and Brian chose the “Beatitudes” as our theme. Ron, with his in-depth knowledge of the biblical connections gave us the historical context and Brian brought the theoretical discussion into our world with real life questions and examples. This led to some spirited discussions on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Word and Communion services on Saturday and Sunday morning also allowed us to bring the discussion to life while we worshipped and praised God together. (Ever heard 12 guys sing in an empty chapel, accompanied by a guitar? Thanks Brian!)

Because we were only twelve men this year everyone had his own private room. But what the group lacked in size it made up in spirited participation. Everyone was able to socialize and enjoy themselves during the ample free periods we had. Needless to say, the food prepared by the St. Andrew’s house staff was once again excellent. Looking forward to next year already.” - Klaus S.

"The men of SJV embarked on a retreat at St. Andrew’s House, which is nestled along the southern bank of Hood Canal overlooking the beautiful fjord below and the Olympic range to the north. As the total of twelve arrived to our quarters we were welcomed to the cozy cabin that would be our home for the next two nights. The theme of the retreat was the Beatitudes, which Jesus preached on the Sermon of the Mount. Each morning began with Liturgy of the Word and Holy Communion along with singing and praise to the most Holy One. Ron Petrusha and Brian Fink led the thoughtful discussion and helped the men see how we also can embody the beatitudes. Delicious meals were provided by the amazing chefs and staff. There was also time to reflect, pray, meditate or simply enjoy each other’s company through discussion accompanied by one’s choice of drink. At the end of the retreat, we each returned to our homes refreshed with new knowledge and wisdom insofar improving ourselves as Catholic Christians." - Jay C.
