Covenant Groups – A Welcome Respite
Rev. Lee Anne Washington
Given the social unrest, political uncertainty, and economic upheaval that we’ve experienced over the last few years, we can all use a respite. Following up on last week’s exploration of the concept of covenants and hearing about how covenant groups are like car washes, washing away the anxiety, alienation, and stress of life, Rev. Lee Anne will lead us in a small group exercise. We will be placed in groups of four throughout the church, given a mini notebook to write in, and given an opportunity to share our thoughts within the small group. Passing is always permitted. Come join us – you’ll be glad you did!

Our Share the Plate recipient for August will be the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center (COTRAIC). This non-profit organization promotes the socio-economic development of the Native American Community and others experiencing economic difficulties in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. The Center is open to Native and Non-Native people, with programs to serve all. Many members and friends in our congregation attend the annual COTRAIC pow-wow in September (September 28th and 29th, 2024). For more information on COTRAIC: www.cotraic.org

November elections will decide the future of liberal democracies
By Connie Hester
This year our elections will have a profound impact. We’ll feel it in our daily lives. Our decisions will reverberate around the world. The strength of all liberal democracies is at stake.
Our civil liberties and political rights in the United States have already declined dramatically* since 2010. We are no longer a top-tier functioning democracy (90+). We now rank 83, just below Argentina and just above Poland. Politicians, media and foreign influencers keep egging us on to give up on our democratic ideals. Sadly, it is working. We must do more to stop our decline. It may be now or never.
The best way to defend liberal democracy is to educate and increase the participation of voters. Too many voters: are frustrated with our dysfunctional system; don’t like either presidential candidate; and may not bother to vote. We can make a difference by helping to Get Out That Vote (GOTV).

Diana Hull, SCT Co-Chair and Liaison to the Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network https://piinpa.org/, recently spoke out against dispensing medication to Allegheny County Jail inmates in the middle of the night. Her advocacy resulted in that procedure being changed to a more compassionate one. Thank you, Diana, for your compassion and dedication!
- With much public support, the Solar for School bills have passed the House & Senate. This legislation will help more Pennsylvanians access solar (renewable) energy to lower pollution; clean up our air; support energy independence and help people save money on their energy bills.
