Linwood Lions - April 2024
Principal's Message

Hello Linwood Lions,

The month of May has so many things to enjoy. Flowers come out, the sun is out and students get more outside time. It is also our state testing month for grades 3-5 and as I spoke of last month we are encouraging students to “Do Their Best.” It is a time for them to be able to show off all of their learning they have had this year.

Here are some things you can do at home to support your student being ready for testing:

1) Rest and Sleep:
  • Encourage your child to get a good night’s rest before each testing day.
  • Adequate sleep helps improve focus and concentration during the test.
2) Healthy Breakfast:
  • A nutritious breakfast is essential on testing days.
  • Consider providing a balanced meal to fuel your child’s brain.
3) Positive Attitude:
  • Remind your child to maintain a growth mindset and stay positive.
  • Encourage them with affirmations like, “I am prepared, and I will do my best.”
4) Timeliness:
  • Ensure your child arrives at school on time.
  • Rushing can add unnecessary stress, so plan ahead.
5) Encouragement:
  • Write a short note of encouragement to your child.
  • We will distribute these notes before the test to boost their confidence.

Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up May 6-10. Teachers love even the smallest call out such as a homemade card or an extra hug.

Thank you for partnering with us in the future of your children. We are honored to get to spend time with them.

Mrs. Tricia Gessele
Principal
24-25 Class Placements
While school is still very much in session, we are already in the process of planning for next school year.

If you would like to submit input regarding your child's placement next year, please complete the form linked here.

Deadline to provide input is Friday, May 10 at 3 p.m., and does not guarantee a specific teacher placement, combo or straight classroom. Linwood strives to create classrooms in which ALL students have an opportunity to be successful.
Safety Drills
Linwood Elementary School routinely conducts safety drills throughout the school year to ensure students are safe and prepared for emergencies that may arise. Today, Wednesday, April 24, a fire drill was conducted in the afternoon. This requires all students and staff to evacuate the building in a safe, organized and timely manner. It is quite a sight to see if you happen to be driving by when we conduct one of our fire drills!

Safety drills are held to familiarize students to the different sounds, evacuation routines and exits so in the case of emergency there will be no hesitation or confusion in leaving the building.

Our next fire drill is scheduled for May 23. Please note that while we do our best to adhere to a scheduled day, things can arise where it needs be moved in order to accommodate success for all our Linwood students.
Kids Challenge & Fun Run
Are you looking for a way to get your child motivated or to encourage them to start running?! Sign them up for the Windermere Marathon or Half Marathon Kids Challenge and Fun Run! Kids will have the whole month of May to log miles making their way to completing a marathon or half marathon distance. They can run/walk the distance over a few days or all month long. All kids registered for the kids challenge will have the opportunity to run 1/2 mile on Sunday, May 19th at Riverfront Park. All finishers will be awarded their medal and shirt at packet pick-up on Saturday, May 18th or Sunday May 19th. Any kids unable to pick-up their shirt and medal will have it mailed to them the week after the race. Register for the Kids Challenge here.

Kids 1/2-Mile Run Info:
If you register your child for the Kids Challenge, they are automatically entered into the Kids 1/2-Mile Run on Sunday, May 19. The 1/2-mile run starts at 11:00am.
  • Kids Run bib & packet pick-up: Kids race check-in at either packet pickup on Saturday (location TBD) or race morning in Riverfront Park (Clock Tower) on Sunday, May 19.
  • Parents, please write your name and contact phone number on the back of your child's bib in the case of an emergency.
  • Kids Run Start Time: 11:00am | Sunday, May 19
  • SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT SAFETY! Parents, this is not a closed or fenced off course. The course will be well marked and staffed with volunteers, but it is your responsibility to make sure your child makes it to the finish line. Parents are welcome to run with their kids for free and help encourage them and take pictures along the way. Please be a responsible parent and know your child's limits and capabilities. The kid's race is not 15-minutes of baby-sitting. Your child is still your responsibility. Help us to ensure this is a safe and positive experience for all our Windermere kids 1-mile participants.
1/2-Mile Course:
The kids 1/2-mile course runs in a circle in Riverfront Park finishing at the clock tower. There will be water available at the finish line. All kids will start together at 11:00am. Parents are encouraged to run with their child.
