NJ Division of Aging Services Announces
RFP for Age-Friendly Grant Program
The Division of Aging Services has released a call for grant proposals for its Age-Friendly Grants Program. This is part of the State-led efforts in making NJ an age-friendly state and follows the Age-Friendly Blueprint released in May. The RFP has 2 options -:
- Age-Friendly Community Grants for $70,000, and
- Age-Friendly Project Grants for $100,000
Services provided under the grants are to begin December 31, 2024 and end June 30, 2026. Other deadlines include:
- August 15, 2024 - Deadline for submission of questions (3:00 PM ET)
- September 12, 2024 - Deadline for receipt of proposals (3:00 PM ET)
NJAAW will host a "Questions Huddle" on Monday, August 12 at 4pm to collect questions. We will consolidate questions, concerns and calls for clarification and submit them to DoAS by the August 15 deadline. Please join us by clicking here: AFQ Huddle

Human Services Awards ‘Senior Save Navigator’ Grants
NJ DHS Commissioner Sarah Adelman announced $5.1 million in grants have been awarded to 11 organizations to serve as “Senior Save Navigators” to raise public awareness about the NJSave application, provide application assistance, and enroll more eligible residents in cost-saving programs. The NJSave application screens for eligibility to more than a dozen cost-saving programs available to low-income older adults and people with disabilities.

Launch of "Retire Ready NJ"
Many workers in New Jersey do not have access to a private retirement savings plan. According to NJAAW's 2024 Statewide Survey of Older Adults, less than half receive a pension and 62% did not feel they had saved enough for retirement.

RetireReady NJ was created to help bridge the gap in retirement savings. Businesses can help their employees save for retirement in a Roth or Traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) through convenient payroll deductions.Webinars for both employers and "savers" will be held in the next 2 months
- Employers: August 7 at 11am & September 12 at 2pm
- Savers: August 28 at 10am & September 26 at 2pm

CMS Approves New 2025 Age-Friendly Hospital Measure
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced its FY2025 Inpatient Prospective Payment Systems final rule that includes a new Age Friendly Hospital Measure.

New Coalition Advocating for More Equity in NJ’s Medicaid Programs
A campaign is underway to urge lawmakers to make New Jersey’s Medicaid program more equitable and enable more older adults and residents with disabilities to receive the care they need in less-restrictive and less-costly home and community settings. Aging and disability stakeholders from around the state are hoping more age-friendly leaders and local advocates will join in the effort to address the injustice of people over 65 and individuals with disabilities being subject to more stringent Medicaid eligibility criteria than younger populations. "Walk My Way" - A Collaborative Walking Series

Walk My Way is a collaborative walking series that developed out of a community coalition that began during the pandemic in May of 2020. ..In 2022 in honor of Older American’s Month in May we decided upon a collective walking series open to all residents with 3 hosts, Montclair, SOMA and West Orange. It was a great way to gather together outside and move. The theme that year was Age My Way, and so we called our walking series Walk My Way.
Our residents enjoy the opportunity to attend walks of 1-2 miles in three different communities and often at varied park locations within each community. Included typically is an educational component such as with a historian or member of the Meadowland Park Conservancy ...

Please join the New Jersey Mature Driver Resource Center for an in-person Train the Trainer presentation of material that can be used by community members who are in a position to inform and instruct mature drivers about driving safer longer, driving limitations, driving retirement, and transportation alternatives.
The audience for this training includes representatives of municipal departments of aging, departments of health, police departments, libraries, faith-based organizations, and other non-profit community organizations.

New Resource for Extreme Heat Preparedness |
Older adults are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, and with the advent of climate change, planning for extreme heat events is crucial. Heat-related illnesses and deaths are largely preventable through proper planning, education, and action.
Heat.govs the leading source of heat and health information, aiming to mitigate the health, economic, and infrastructural impacts of extreme heat. As the web portal for the National Integrated Heat Health Information System, Heat.gov provides critical heat and health information, helping to prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths through informed planning, education, and action.

Profile of Older Americans - 2023
The Administration for Community Living has released the 2023 Profile of Older Americans, which provides statistics on the U.S. older adult population using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The Profile illustrates the shifting demographics of Americans 65+ including key topic areas such as future population growth, marital status, living arrangements, income, employment, and health.
