ACMS Foundation Launches Physician Wellness Program at ACMS Honors

Last Thursday, at ACMS Honors, the ACMS Foundation announced the launch of the ACMS Physician Wellness Program. In his announcement speech, Dr. Vint Blackburn, the physician member who is serving as the lead on the project, highlighted the pressing issue of physician well-being, citing alarming statistics of suicidal ideation and mortality rates among doctors. The Physician Wellness Program (PWP) emerges as a crucial solution, removing barriers to mental health support for physicians and medical residents in Allegheny County. Offering up to four counseling sessions per year with carefully selected therapists, the program addresses unique challenges like depression and burnout. Confidentiality and voluntary participation ensure a safe environment for seeking help, supported by initial funding from The Physicians Foundation. Accessible through the ACMS website, the program aims to destigmatize mental health care in the medical community and foster a culture of support.

This booking site for appointments is set to go live on May 15, 2024. For now visit the website to learn more about the program and check out our feature on the PWP in this month's ACMS Bulletin.

PA State House Passes Bill to End Non-Competes

On April 17 the PA State House passed HB 1633 which would prohibit medical employers from using restrictive noncompete agreements that prevent doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals who leave a job from practicing elsewhere.

Allegheny County Medical Society applauds the work of Rep. Frankel, Arvind Venkat, and the PAMED legislative team for their work on this legislation. The bill will now move to the PA Senate, and we urge you to reach out to your local elected officials on this issue. Stay tuned for more updates!
