Greetings From Mr. Estes... |
Dear SASEAS Families,
During mass today Fr Del spent some time engaging students with the question of physical/material poverty and spiritual poverty. He specifically asked “how do we recognize these poverties in others” ? As always, our students provided several thoughtful, relevant answers; I encourage you to ask your children about their response or their memory of the overall discussion. In conclusion, Fr Del emphasized that spiritual poverty is the more significant of the two and of the importance of acknowledging how much we need God at all times throughout our lives; it was a nice reminder for me.
Our Meet the Teacher event for first through eighth grade families is tomorrow evening, September 12. I am looking forward to spending time together and enabling families to visit our school and each other, get acquainted with the faculty and staff, and learn about our plans for the year. Please see the reminders section for details and times for the evening.
This Friday is our first early dismissal day; students will be dismissed at 1:00. These occur monthly to allow teachers to attend professional development sessions that enable them to better serve our families. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in making these possible.
On this anniversary of September 11, 2001, I would like to share the prayer that the faculty, staff, and students prayed together to begin our day.
Dear God, in memory of the people impacted on this day in 2001, help us to honor their lives through our daily words and actions. May we recognize Your presence in all people and be a source of Peace in our community. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit within us, enable us to demonstrate the Faith, Hope, and Love that you offer the entire world through Your Son, Jesus.
Please see Fr Del’s note below for a Saint Mary Magdalene Parish Family Beacons of Light update.
Make it a great week!
God Bless,
Paul Estes

Points to Ponder
Some of you have inquired about the status of the Beacons of Light program in the Mary Magdalene Family. The following is a short summary of our progress. With the implementation of any new program a significant amount of training and formation of leadership teams must take place. We have completed that phase and are well into the next phases of the Beacons program. We have made tremendous steps in getting things done. Here are just a few of our accomplishments to date.
We have established a common family staff, Family Parish Council, Faith Formation Team, Faith Formation Commission, Parish Leadership Team, and a single Worship Commission with three liturgy planning committees. We still have three Finance Councils but with complete transparency of finances for all three parishes. We have developed an organizational structure according to the Beacons principles for all the ministries and organizations in our three parishes. We have established a common family web page and a common phone system that will be connected soon at all three parish sites. New common email addresses are also soon to follow. We have increased the enrollment in our schools by 10% this year. The number of baptisms, both adults and children is increasing, and the number of those baptized from other Christian denominations who become Catholic is increasing. These are all significant steps now completed as we move forward in the Beacons planning process.
There are still many organizational, administrative, and legal tasks to face which will require more work by the Family Parish Council and church staff. Beacons of Light was, and still is, an enormous endeavor and it will take significantly more time to achieve our desired results. It is like joining three substantial businesses into one. I would like to thank those in our family of parishes for their efforts and good will as that has made this process much easier.
If you were to ask what is the best way for the parishioners to help going forward, I would emphasize one thing. This is something necessary whether Beacons continues or we were to stay as single parishes: We need to increase the number of Catholics who attend Mass each week. COVID resulted in many Catholics not returning to church. So, ask your Catholic friends who no longer come to Mass to join you on the weekend, or perhaps other friends not yet Catholic to join you at Mass. As disciples of Christ this is one of the main jobs we have—spreading the good news!
Please continue to pray for the parish life of St. Mary Magdalene Parish Family.

Picture Days for Preschool are this Thursday and Friday, September 12 and 13. The pictures are being taken by Lifetouch Preschool. You do not have to order pictures in advance. Proofs will be sent home with the students next week and families can order prints at that time. I’m looking forward to seeing all those smiles!
Mrs. Christina’s 3-year-old class is learning about Dinosaurs this week. They are making binoculars so they can look for dinosaurs in the wild! They are also learning about “Prayer” in religion class. Mrs. Sheila’s class is learning about shapes and colors. They are stamping different shapes on paper with brightly colored paint. They will also trace different shapes and cut them out to make “Shape Monsters”
The four-year-old classes are making shape collages out of brightly colored paper as they learn to recognize and name their shapes, and they are mixing colored paint in art to make new and different colors. They are practicing letter strokes in handwriting, and there are color mixing science experiments with Skittles and water in each classroom. They are also working on a “God’s Colorful World” booklet in religion class as they learn that “God Made Color”.
The five-year-old class is reading the Brown Bear book by Eric Carle and making Rainbow hats. They will wrap up the week with a Color Scavenger Hunt as they try to find colors in nature while they walk around the school.
Have a blessed week!
Mrs. Aimee
