Hunter's Creek Middle School Community Brief Monday, October 21, 2024
Dear Mark,
As we have started the second nine-weeks, the instructional focus is at a peak, and our students are setting their academic goals for the year with the help of our amazing HCMS teachers and school counselors. Parents! This is the time to sit with your students and review with them their academic goals and keep them on task.
We had the first house meetings for the year on Friday, 10/4. These meetings were a HUGE success filled with community building, activities, and other fun! Please see photos below.
We continue to use the HERO program as the HCMS Positive Behavior Intervention Support system in order to recognize our students. Our teachers also award students HERO points for wearing their house color on House Spirit Days which take place every Wednesday. We invite our Eagle parents to register for your own HERO account, if you have not already done so, so we may keep the lines of communication between home and school open.
Parents! Absences and tardiness rob our students out of important instructional time. Thank you for making this a top priority in supporting your child's academic success.
In closing, I am sad to let you know that Ms. Harriett Coleman, previous HCMS principal, who opened Hunter’s Creek Middle School in 1994 has passed away on Monday, 9/23/2024.
Ms. Coleman was an educator who helped shape the lives of thousands of children. Our gym carries her name in dedication to her commitment to HCMS and the Hunter’s Creek Community within her ten years as principal for our school.
Have a great week Eagles!
In Eagle Pride,
Joumana Moukaddam
Proud Principal

The OCPS 2024 Fall Stakeholder Survey window is now open, but will be closing on October 29. Your input is very valuable HCMS, so please answer 2 questions about your satisfaction with our school as well as providing your opinions on ThoughtExchange. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Portuguese.
Your personal responses will never be shared with anyone in the school, so please provide honest, thoughtful feedback. Your responses will only be reported in combination with other employees’ responses. The data will be used as we work to ensure our school aligns with our core values.
It can be completed using any electronic device with internet access by clicking on the anonymous link (bit.ly/ocps_families) or using the QR code below. You will receive reminder emails during the survey dates.
HCMS families with children at more than one school will see survey questions for each school. If you have multiple children at the same school, you should think about the experiences of your older child in that school.
Thank you for your time!

HCMS Beanstack READATHON Fundraiser ENDS 10/31!
Visit our HCMS Beanstack READATHON Fundraiser page (https://ocpshunterscreekmiddle.beanstack.com/fundraisers/673/community_donations) where you can help support our school’s literacy activities by donating to our "Read to Raise" challenge!
Beanstack is an app OCPS students use to track their reading and is already used regularly at HCMS. Our students will track their reading and share their progress with family & friends.
Your donation supports our reading program at HCMS, plus you'll inspire our students to read more. You can make a difference - every dollar raised, and minute spent reading, counts.
Students who collect donations and log minutes will earn prizes and Beanstack badges.
This fundraiser is also a House Competition. Currently, Europe has the most donations—can any other house catch up?!?!
Each student will also get their own personal link to share; they can access it through their Beanstack app.
The Readathon runs through October 31st; we hope you will consider supporting our students and their reading!

Ms. DeLuca
In Ms. DeLuca’s reading classes, students used word parts to break apart unknown words to determine their meaning.
| |
Ms. Febus
Students in Ms. Febus’s class took part in a cookie dig to pretend to be archaeologists and scavenged for chocolate chips. This was in preparation for the unit on archaeology. The activity was very fun and delicious.

HCMS Vocabulary Initiative Update
Our HCMS Vocabulary Initiative is focusing on word parts aiming towards being able to break apart words to determine their meaning. Research shows that learning word parts is the most effective way to grow vocabulary in the secondary setting because one word part can help with determining the meaning of many words.
Here are the Word Parts that have been shared on Eagle Eye News so far this year:
