A Letter From Our President & CEO | |
“Create the kind of workplace and company culture that will attract great talent. If you hire brilliant people, they will make work feel more like play.” - Sir Richard Branson.
“If you get the culture right, most of the other stuff will just take care of itself.” - Tony Hsieh.
“Culture is about making people feel good about how they contribute to the whole.”
- Tracy Streckenbach.

When you enter the Elliott Museum, you will notice a large and luminous sign on your immediate right that reads: “We gracefully embrace a culture of creating great memories, touching hearts, and uplifting the spirits of each other and everyone who crosses our threshold.” These words could not carry any more meaning for us if they were tattooed indelibly on our foreheads. I picked up this concept as a young lad and waited patiently to be in a leadership position to put the idea to good use. I worked as a cook in a chain restaurant in Michigan called Bill Knapps. Those of you who remember Bill Knapps probably do so fondly. I recall that a large group of employees were gathered attentively around our manager, and he said, “You will never treat the customers any better than you treat each other, so let’s all try to get along.” It made sense to me then, and it still holds water today. Our beloved staff and volunteers have embraced this culture, and our guests can palpably feel it the moment they open the door. There is an inordinate amount of caring and sharing that occurs in our museums seven days a week, giving purpose to all of us. I hope you will join us to charge your batteries soon.
Our dear friend King Tut has left us as of May 31st. We owe a debt of gratitude to our dear friends, Tarek and Muhamed Ragab from Egypt, who partnered with us to bring this historically well-received exhibit to the Treasure Coast. It appears that we have had the pleasure of enlightening 40,000 guests for this astounding exhibit.
As King Tut rides out on a surfboard, dozens of outrageously cool surfboards will take his place as we welcome “Surfing Florida: A Photographic History.” Hang ten.

The Forgotten Town of Port Mayaca
By Chessy Ricca
While we take a break from the Ashley story, we will shift our focus to western Martin County to a forgotten town called Port Mayaca.
Lake Okeechobee during the time of John Ashley was full of catfishermen, farmers, and pioneering families. Before the great hurricane of 1928, Lake Okeechobee’s shoreline was teaming with life. Herbert Hoover’s dike had not yet blocked the view of endless water. Model-T touring cars could putter up and down the poor quality road that took you into another ancient world. For hundreds of years, the area of Port Mayaca was a meeting place. Before the canal was built, there was most likely a natural river that flowed out of the lake and to the east or southeast. To the south east starts the Everglades and to the east lay cypress, pine, and prairie. It didn’t take long before this beautiful and unique spot in Martin County was discovered and developed.

KENDA BEDFORD
What did you do for a living in your career life?
I was in banking in Atlanta and the panhandle of Florida for the first half of my career. When my family and I moved back to Texas, I became involved with fundraising in an educational setting.
What are your special interests/passions?
I love the National Park system and have visited over 25 National Parks, Monuments, Forests, etc., including the Dry Tortugas off Key West. St. John's in the Virgin Islands is top of the bucket list.
What is something that would surprise us about you?
We moved to the area to be closer to the ocean. Although I enjoy being out on it, I don't spend too much time on the beach because of the sand.
What’s your favorite thing about volunteering at the HSMC?
I love sharing the story of The House of Refuge to visitors from near and far. So many people are surprised we have this amazing property on the Treasure Coast that has withstood the elements for almost 1 50 years now. It truly is this hidden gem that has yet to be discovered by so many.
