Woodlands Elementary Teachers Receive Magical Visit to Kick Off the School Year
Teachers at Woodlands Elementary were selected for a very special surprise from our friends at Disney. As part of their "Summer of Sharing" initiative, Disney reached out to five local school districts, including Seminole County, and asked if they could sprinkle a bit of magic for teachers to kick off the 2024-2025 school year, and express their appreciation for all the hard work of our dedicated educators.
|
A team from Disney, Superintendent Beamon, and School Board Chair Abby Sanchez were able to surprise Woodlands Elementary teachers with a personal "thank you" and introduced the Disney team to share a special surprise of Disney park tickets. Just when our teachers thought the surprise was over, none other than Donald Duck and Daisy Duck made their way into the classrooms for hugs and pictures. It was a day filled with laughter, tears, and even a few screams from lifelong Disney fans here and there.
We often say in Seminole County that we are the A-rated, academically high-performing school district that we are because of the incredible support of our community members, civic organizations, and businesses like Disney. It takes all of us to educate the next generation, and we are so lucky to live in a county that embraces our amazing educators and supports our local public schools and our students.

Midway Students Get a Glowing Literacy Lesson
At Midway Elementary School of the Arts, Ms. Klein’s students enjoyed practicing their central idea skills in a neon read on activity! They analyzed their work under black lights and worked as a team to understand each other’s similar and different answers. Our teachers are always finding new ways to engage our students and bring learning to life.

Evans Elementary Receives New Book Vending Machine
Thanks to a grant from the Oviedo Women's Club, Evans Elementary now has a new book vending machine. School Board Vice-Chair Kraus, Superintendent Beamon, Assistant Superintendent Senko, and members of the Oviedo Women's Club joined Principal Hardy and Literacy Teacher Melissa Vaccaro for the unveiling of the new book vending machine.
| |
|
This initiative not only aligns perfectly with our SCPS theme of making connections but also fosters a love for reading among students. The book vending machine will provide easy access to a variety of books, encouraging students to explore new stories and ideas. The project was made possible through proceeds from successful book fairs and a generous grant from the Oviedo Women's Club, ensuring that every child at Evans Elementary has the opportunity to dive into the world of literature.

SCPS Bus Named Florida Bus Operator of the Year
We are so excited to share that Romanita Cancel, an SCPS bus driver for the past 14 years, has been named the Florida Bus Operator of the Year.
| |
|
During a routine morning route, Ms. Cancel demonstrated unparalleled quick thinking and courage. Upon noticing a suspicious interaction between a young girl and an unknown male in a black pickup truck, Romanita immediately sprang into action. She observed the girl's discomfort and hesitation, recognizing the signs of potential danger. Without hesitation, Romanita intervened, boldly confronting the individual and preventing the girl from being taken.
Her swift actions not only halted a potentially perilous situation but also ensured the safety and well-being of the child under her care. Following the incident, Romanita took further initiative by pursuing the perpetrator, obtaining vital information, and promptly alerting the authorities. Her proactive approach undoubtedly played a pivotal role in apprehending the individual and preventing future harm.
Congratulations Ms. Cancel! We are so glad you're part of the SCPS family.

Lyman High Named Distinguished School for STEM Curriculum and Career Readiness
Lyman High School's Academy of Engineering Magnet has been recognized as a 2023-24 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished School for the second year in a row. It is one of just a few hundred high schools across the U.S. to receive this honor for providing broad access to transformative learning experiences for students through PLTW Introduction to Engineering, Environmental Sustainability, Aerospace Engineering, Digital Electronics, and Civil Architectural Engineering.
|
The PLTW Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, Lyman High School had to meet multiple criteria in the 2022-23 school year such as the number of PLTW courses available to students, percent of students enrolled in PLTW, percentage of students taking more than one PLTW course, and efforts to ensure equitable access to PLTW courses.

Markham Woods Middle School Teachers Selected as Fellows for Project Invent
We are excited to share that Ms. Anita Neal-Okoro and Mr. Tom Stafford have been selected as a Fellow for the 2024-2025 cohort of the Project Invent Fellowship.
| |
The PI Fellowship is an innovative program that empowers educators to foster design thinking, making, and entrepreneurship skills in students, enabling them to develop technologies that address real-world challenges in their communities.
One of the key benefits of being a Project Invent Fellow is the invaluable connections they will gain. Ms. Neal-Okoro and Mr. Stafford will have the opportunity to collaborate with community partners, experts, and professionals, ensuring their students receive authentic feedback and guidance throughout their invention journey. Additionally, Fellows and their students will participate in national pitch events, providing students with a platform to showcase their learning and compete for funding to bring their inventions to life.
Congratulations to Ms. Neal-Okoro and Mr. Stafford. We can't wait to see what comes next for you and your students!
