Shadows-on-the-Teche Receives LEH Culture Care Fund Grant

NEW IBERIA, La. --- The Shadows-on-the-Teche has been selected as a recipient of a Louisiana Culture Care Fund (LCCF) Grant by the Louisiana Endowment of the Humanities. Originally launched in 2020 to help protect Louisiana’s cultural institutions impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the LCCF continues to provide the state’s cultural nonprofits with vital operational funding.

For Shadows, this generous support will allow their staff to continue developing new, innovative programs in the upcoming year that interpret the full and inclusive history of the site. This includes:

  • continuing to expand the visitor experience launched in May 2023,
  • opening four new exhibits that provide an overview of national, state, and local history from the Antebellum to the Jim Crow period; showcase artifacts found onsite during archaeological digs; highlight the men and women who worked for Weeks Hall, the last private owner of the Shadows; and share an inside look of Weeks Hall as an eccentric artist, and
  • launch a full year of programming centered on the themes of education, art, and climate.

Funding for the 2024 Louisiana Culture Care Fund Grant has been provided by the State of Louisiana and administered by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.

About Shadows-on-the-Teche:

The Shadows-on-the-Teche, National Trust for Historic Preservation site, opened to the public in 1961 with the mission to preserve the buildings, landscape, collections, and historical integrity of the site; to research and interpret through education programs a 19th century southern Louisiana plantation economy and community and their evolution; and to encourage an appreciation of and interest in historic preservation.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, which owns and operates the Shadows-on-the-Teche, is a private, non-profit organization. The Shadows does not receive funding from federal, state, parish, or city government. The site supports itself through admissions, special programs and events, and donations to the Friends of the Shadows.
