OCTOBER 2024

Dear Alexis,

As our Northern neighbors start pulling out their scarves and sipping hot cocoa, we in Central Florida are still rocking flip-flops and debating if it’s time to turn the AC down a notch. Who knew “fall” could mean a slight decrease in humidity and a chance to enjoy the outdoors without melting? Get ready for some “a-maize-ing” updates—because while the leaves up north are changing color, we’re just hoping our pumpkin spice lattes come iced!

On a more serious note - In the wake of the recent hurricane, my heart goes out to everyone affected by the storm. Although this one spared most of us in Central Florida, I hope our member’s friends and loved ones are safe and recovering.

As some may know, the ASCE East Central Branch had a new slate of officers begin their positions on October 1st! These individuals were inducted on September 13th at our annual Officer Installation Luncheon. We were honored to have our ASCE Region 5 Director, Sarah Matin, conduct our installation and had the pleasure of hosting Catalina Chacon & Keith Slater from FDOT D5 and Moving I-4 Forward Corridor Office, respectively, who gave a great update on their Moving Florida Forward initiatives throughout Central Florida. Not only did we bring in the new slate of officers to our Branch, but we also awarded scholarships, recognized our Branch award winners, Life Members, and all who served as an officer or committee member over the past year.

Please join me in congratulating the 2024-2025 East Central Branch Board Officers:

  • Past president – Corey Bloxam
  • President – Thomas Anzelone
  • President-Elect – Juan Gonzalez
  • Vice President – Isadore Carrie III
  • Treasurer – Mallory Murray
  • Secretary – Catherine Felter

Our student scholarship winners were Briana Grotzinger, Marina Rockwell, Edward Collazo Borges, Beatrice Ribeiro (the East Central Branch Legacy Scholarship winner), Raissa Bianco, and Alex Roche (Not Pictured).

We also had an amazing Scholarship Golf Tournament at Celebration Golf Course on September 20th. Over 110 golfers joined us for a day of “driving” and networking. Thank you to all of the amazing sponsors and exhibitors we had for the tournament, the event would not be possible without your support. A huge thanks to our Golf Tournament Chair, Craig Ballock, for all his efforts to make sure the event was a success, and thank you to all of the students and members for volunteering to make sure everything went smoothly.

Don’t forget as the end of the year approaches, membership renewals are due by December 31st! Check out ASCE’s partner programs to take advantage of discounts of membership fees for your company with 10 or more members. Check out the link below for more information:

There were 24 attendees at this event.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING INSTITUTE

Summary of the presentation

Aurelio Silva, MEng, Regional Engineer at IDEA StatiCa, will present on "Delegated Design of Connections Using Finite Element Analysis". He explores the concept of delegated connection design and delves into the three options provided by the AISC Code of Standard Practice.

The presentation examines current practices in connection design, ranging from traditional methods such as using AISC tables, hand calculations, and Excel spreadsheets, to modern approaches like BIM/detailing software and connection design software. It underscores the numerous benefits of employing FEA for connection design, including enhanced design flexibility, significant time savings, and material efficiency.

A pivotal highlight is the introduction of the Component-Based Finite Element Method (CBFEM), which revolutionizes traditional component method design guides by overcoming geometric limitations. Through design examples, the presentation vividly illustrates how FEA can be applied in connection design ensuring compliance with AISC requirements.

Overall, the presentation underscores the transformative impact of FEA in connection design, emphasizing its potential to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and integration with BIM workflows.

Save the date for the upcoming webinar with proceeds benefiting the EWB's Nepal and Guatemala water supply projects on November 14th. The topic will be the Nexus Between Water Quality and Tribal Cultural Lifeways. Our presenter is Captain Michale Stover, P.E.. In this presentation, Mike Stover will explore the connection of water quality to the preservation of tribal sustenance practices, traditional lifeways and cultural connections to the natural environment in Native American communities. Legacy industrial toxins, hydropower without adequate fish passage, and the effects of climate change pose a threat to the survival of tribal cultural and dietary lifeways. Recent advances in federal policy and regulations are helping to thwart the impacts to Tribal culture through promulgation of protective water quality standards, permit conditions and industrial licensing.

October Report

As we approach October, students continue to charge on with the Fall Semester. We have had two successful General Body Meetings this month from Whiting-Turner and LandDesign. Not only has attendance for the General Body Meetings been notable, but students have also been involved with competition meetings, tailgating, social events, and volunteering. Not to mention professional development events like the Lunch and Learn with Robert Schmitt. Those that attended got to partake in a meal and a valuable learning experience. Students also got to bond at the Minecraft Game Knight, the Steel Bridge Social, and the Minute to Win it Canoe Social. To give our members a well-rounded knowledge of Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe, we hosted a Swap Event with Canoe and Bridge. This event allowed members to gain experience with welding and concrete mixing. Students also had the opportunity to volunteer and network at the ECB Annual Golf Tournament! Additionally, officers continue to meet on a biweekly basis to discuss club matters such as overall planning, symposium preparation, mentorship/mentee relationships, and more.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

At ADS, no idea is off-limits, and we celebrate creativity and bold moves.  For more than 50 years ADS has been manufacturing a variety of innovative and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional materials. Headquartered in Hilliard, Ohio, we are a multi-billion dollar stormwater management company, manufacturing pipe and ancillary products. What does that mean? When it storms, we capture rain with our drain basins, convey it with pipe, store it using chambers, and finally treat it with our water quality products, before safely returning water back to the environment. We handle, what we call, the entire lifecycle of a raindrop. Our products help prevent flooding, which increases the quality of life for people living in large cities, suburbs, and rural towns. We also believe in creating a circular economy and are the largest plastic recycling company in North America. We use plastic shampoo and detergent bottles to create pipes, diverting over 500 million pounds of plastic from landfills every year. ADS operates a global network of over 60 manufacturing plants and 30 distribution centers.

We have amazing stories to tell, and we need your help getting our story out there. To learn more about ADS, please visit our website at www.adspipe.com
