This Best of BobBlast is all about painting a series! I would like to start with the Best Painting Lesson I ever received.
I was in my freshman year of art college and got my first painting assignment. I was very proud of the first painting I did in my class and proudly show it to my instructor. She asked if I liked my efforts. I said, smiling, “YES!” I was expecting an agreeable reaction from her, but she only said, “Now, do it ninety-nine more times.” Out of spite, I did ninety-nine more. When I brought ALL of my paintings to show her, she asked, “Now do you like your first one?” All I could do was smile and said, “Not anymore.” I got the message.
I continued to paint multiple, repeated images. Each one became looser and looser and more painterly.
My advice is to start by painting a single subject or a theme that is close to your heart. A series can be several paintings that are in the same family - or thousands of paintings that are related. The relationship between paintings in a series can be something very simple, like:
•Subject matter - Such as fruit, landscapes, clouds, faces, figures etc.
•Color - The common thread can be your color combination
•Composition - Your series showcases your favorites composition
•Mood - The common thread can be the feeling your paintings convey
Have you ever seen all thirty paintings of Monet's Haystacks? No two identical… different times of day, different color combinations, different viewpoints - all the same subject. All siblings, not twins. Now, that's a series. A series is a collection of paintings showing a subject the artist is deeply connected to.
For me, communicating a feeling, memory or mood in a painting opens the door for me to paint many more! Paint a Series!
