What's Cool in Our Schools

Two SCPS Schools Are Celebrating 100 Years

We are so excited to share that Geneva Elementary School and Lyman High School are both celebrating their centennial anniversaries.

"The Geneva School House" (as it was formerly known) was designed by well known architect Elton J. Moughton and constructed in 1924 at 101 East Main Street in Geneva, Florida. The building had three classrooms, an office, and an auditorium to serve grades one through twelve.

In the 1940s, the building became Geneva Elementary School. A unique 4-H program was established in 1941 by the school's principal, Willie Sieg. The program encompassed courses on home economics and farming, and also won various awards. In May 1988, a new campus for the elementary school was built at 275 First Street. The original building was dedicated in 1955 as the Geneva Family Resource Center. In 2008, the building was converted into the Rural Heritage Center and is listed on the Florida Site File of Historic Places, as well as the Seminole County Threatened and Endangered Resources List. The old school building remains on the grounds occupied by the buildings erected in the early 1980's.

Lyman High was once located where today's campus of Milwee Middle School is, and it's history dates back to the early 1900's when a man named Howard Charles Lyman, and his wife, Emma Abbott Lyman, first arrived in the Altamonte Springs area. They were invited by former Congressman Charles Haines to winter in Florida at his retreat along Lake Orienta. Soon, the couple became actively involved in the political and social aspects of the community.

A few years after Seminole County separated from Orange County, the Lymans and other Altamonte residents voted to incorporate the Town of Altamonte Springs on November 11, 1920. In the years between 1922-1923, with the increasing population of Special Tax District No. 3, it became apparent that better school facilities were going to be necessary, as the small two-teacher buildings at Altamonte and Longwood were no longer adequate.

The local board of trustees, Mr. Ben Overstreet and Mr. Howard Lyman, called several mass meetings to discuss bonding the district for new school buildings. Mr. Overstreet suggested the idea of consolidation rather than three school buildings to be located at Longwood, Altamonte, and Lake Mary. This plan was studied by the trustees and placed before the taxpayers. The Lake Mary patrons, on account of their location, decided to have their own local building and were given their pro rata share of the bonded amount. Altamonte and Longwood decided to consolidate into one school.

In the bond election of July 1923, the plan was approved by the majority, and the contract was let to J.B. Southard Company of Orlando. The cornerstone was laid with an impressive ceremony by the Longwood, Sanford, and Altamonte Masonic lodges in August 1924. The death of Howard Charles Lyman occurred on July 7, just five days before the bond election; in appreciation of his work with Mr. Overstreet, the school was given Mr. Lyman’s name.

The new school opened in September of 1924.

Pre-Vet Student and Teacher to be Featured in Statewide Campaign

Many of you may remember hearing Nevaeh's story from last year. At the time, she was a 7th grade student taking a pre-veterinary class at Sanford Middle School. Fortunately, her teacher had delivered a lesson on CPR for animals, and Nevaeh paid attention.

While her grandmother's dog was delivering puppies, Nevaeh watched in awe, but soon, she noticed one of the puppies was not breathing. She sprang into action and began using the lesson she learned from Ms. Friedman's classroom to revive the pup. Nevaeh continued CPR and massaging the puppy for 45 minutes. She knew not to give up quickly because of a story her teacher had shared about a time it took nearly an hour to revive a kitten using this same technique.

Thankfully, Nevaeh was able to resuscitate the dog, and much to her delight, he became her pet and is now called Asher. The Florida School Board Association is currently highlighting stories that reflect the opportunities available to public school students and heard about this special young lady.

Her story was selected as just one of three in the State to be featured on film. The filming took place this week and even features a cameo from Asher himself. We can't wait to share it with you once it's finished. We are so proud of Nevaeh and Ms. Friedman! These kind of stories illustrate so many of the amazing lessons that carry over into daily life and make a difference.

Volunteers Needed - Financial Literacy Program

The financial literacy program, "Living on My Own", will begin the year at Markham Woods Middle School on Friday 9/6. This program, created by UF IFAS Extension Seminole County/UF IFAS Extension Seminole County 4-H, is provided in SCPS as a partnership with SCPS Dividends/Community Involvement, business partners, community members, Markham Woods Middle School PTSA, and volunteers like you!

During each 90 min session, students are assigned jobs or careers and family situations and will make transactions at 10 storefronts in the "city" including transportation, housing, groceries and more. Students will consider lifestyle choices that adults face daily as they manage a monthly income and their bank account.

Are you an adult who has paid bills? You are totally qualified!

Consider volunteering for a session of "Living on My Own"! Volunteers are at each "storefront" table in the city representing real life businesses. Information and instructions are located at each station. There will be a quick volunteer training and overview of the program on the day of the event.
