Celebrate National Ergonomics Month | National Ergonomics Month (NEM), established by HFES in 2003, highlights the significance of ergonomics in enhancing human well-being and performance. Throughout October, HFES encourages professionals and the broader community to engage through presentations, educational activities and social media outreach. |
NEM Social Media Challenge
One of the main ways to get involved with NEM this year is through our social media challenge. Five prizes ($25-$100 value) will be randomly drawn for participants.

Technical Group Highlight: Occupational Ergonomics Technical Group
In celebration of NEM, we want to shine a spotlight on the Occupational Ergonomics Technical Group (OETG). Dedicated to addressing key issues in occupational ergonomics, the OETG plays a crucial role in advancing human factors research, education and professional growth. Whether through hosting lecture sessions, discussion panels or webinars, OETG fosters collaboration among professionals and promotes the exchange of knowledge year-round.
Be sure to explore their initiatives, including student travel awards, best paper presentations and symposia at HFES annual meetings, as we celebrate the importance of ergonomics this month!

Fall Human Factors Congressional Outlook of 2024 |
With the election quickly approaching, Congress has left D.C. to focus on campaigning with several outstanding items still to complete when they return before the end of the year. While this year was defined by the ineffectiveness of a divided government, Congress was nevertheless able to pass a few major pieces of legislation including the fiscal year (FY) 2024 spending package, the national security supplemental spending package, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization bill.
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society navigated this environment to advance key priorities for the human factors community including provisions related to human factors safety at the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration.

HFES Best Paper Award Webinar: Adapting Cognitive Task Analysis Methods for Use in a Large Sample Simulation Study of High-Risk Healthcare Events
Wednesday, October 16 at 12:00 p.m. ET
In this webinar, the speaker will discuss how cognitive task analysis (CTA), typically used in small-sample studies, was adapted for a study involving 102 anesthesiologists working through simulated high-risk incidents.
Participants will learn about the challenges of standardizing interview techniques across a large and diverse team, developing effective training and managing and analyzing extensive qualitative data. The session will offer insights into the innovative strategies used to overcome these challenges and early findings from the study’s preliminary analysis.
