Title Review: Library Staff

"The result of his deep dive is a vivid portrait of our nation’s

fatal divide over state’s rights and slavery ..."

Director of Library Operations Pam Parker recommends Demon of Unrest by Erik Larsen.

Readers of Eric Larson’s other noteworthy historical exposés, such as The Devil in the White City (2003), will find familiar territory in his new Civil War-themed work, The Demon of Unrest (2024).

I found this latest effort to be surprisingly suspenseful considering that the Civil War is a subject about which plenty has already been written.

Noting that some 16,000 biographies about Abraham Lincoln have been published, Larson has intentionally avoided ‘Honest Abe’ as a subject.

It took the pandemic – and a trove of primary resources uncovered during lockdown – to renew his interest. The result of his deep dive is a vivid portrait of our nation’s fatal divide over state’s rights and slavery and, for the reader, a better understanding of why this conflict came to be...

Book Beat: Student Book Review

My name is Judah. I enjoy playing soccer and baseball. In the winter, I enjoy Nordic and alpine skiing. When it comes to reading, adventure books are my favorite. For my Book Beat review I read The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle.

The book of Robin Hood is an historical fiction novel. This book is filled with thrilling story of a man and his men righting the wrongs of evil Prince John.

King Richard the Lionhearted was the rightful ruler of England but when he left to go fight in the crusades, his brother Prince John became the ruler of England.

Prince John was hated among his Kingdom for overcharging taxes from England’s loyal subjects. Robin Hood came to the rescue of the poor folk of Nottingham. He “stole from the rich to feed the poor.”

Robin pulled the poor, who were being overly taxed with money that they could not pay, out of their misery...
