The New HFES Website Has Launched

After months of research, thoughtful development, volunteer input and extensive testing, we are proud to unveil the newly enhanced HEFS website, designed with a human-first strategy and user experience in mind.

The HFES website was built with the most important thing in mind: you. Come explore our new website today.

Right Now at ASPIRE

ASPIRE is in full swing in Phoenix and one of ASPIRE's highlight events is the HFES Awards and Honors program, celebrating this year’s outstanding contributors to the human factors and ergonomics field.

This montage video showcases several of the award recipients, reflecting their dedication to advancing the HF/E field.

Share Your HFES Testimonial

The Membership Committee invites you to share your experiences via a form or a one-minute video. Submit your entry at Membership Testimonials 2024 - Formstack or upload a video. Your entry may be featured in the Bulletin, and you'll be entered into a raffle to win one FREE night at ASPIRE 2025.

Congratulations to Technical Groups Achieving Circle of Excellence Status

We are excited to announce that the Training Technical Group (TTG) has earned gold status. The TTG serves as a hub for information exchange among professionals interested in human factors as applied to training systems. Its work has significantly enhanced safety and performance outcomes across diverse industries, making this recognition well-deserved.

The Extended Reality Technical Group (XRTG) has been rewarded bronze status. The XRTG is dedicated to exploring human factors issues in human-virtual environment interactions, with a focus on optimizing performance efficiency in virtual environments, ensuring user safety and addressing potential social challenges through proactive assessment.

The Occupational Ergonomics Technical Group (OETG) has been awarded bronze status. The OETG focuses on applying HF/E to improve safety, productivity and the quality of work in various industries, particularly in service and manufacturing processes. This milestone reflects their contributions to advancing workplace ergonomics.

Meet New Corresponding Member: Adolfo Campos Durán

The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics has initiated a program to sponsor HFES memberships for HF/E students and professionals residing outside the United States. We are very pleased to introduce a new HFES member from the first group of recipients: Adolfo Campos Durán.

"My name is Adolfo Campos Durán. I am a kinesiologist, and I live in Chile. Throughout my professional practice, I have worked in the public sphere in government programs as well as in the clinical area, attending to patients and focusing on their physical rehabilitation.

In 2023, I graduated from the master's program in ergonomics and human factors at the University of Valparaíso, where I was able to participate in research projects related to the aging of the workforce in professional drivers in the passenger and cargo transport industry.

Currently, I work as an ergonomics specialist in a social security administrative agency against risks of work accidents and occupational diseases, where I provide advice on musculoskeletal surveillance protocols to affiliated companies from various industries.

The main motivation and use of this scholarship is for academics. Having access to an updated bibliography of prestigious journals will enhance my ability to apply the latest available evidence in my professional work. Additionally, it will help me to promote the special interest I have in research, an area still little explored personally."

Please contact us at info@ergofoundation.org to nominate a recipient or to donate to support this program.

HFES Webinar: Pathways to Creating Accessible Web-Based Applications

Friday, September 27 at 3:00 p.m. ET

The goal of this workshop is to educate beginner and experienced software practitioners on accessibility best practices for web-based applications, by illustrating current barriers within implementation workflows and what software companies can do to improve.

After completing this workshop, attendees will be able to understand the importance of accessible software, implement accessibility principles into their software development process and champion accessibility for their users.

HFES Volunteer Registration

Do you want more from your HFES membership? Are you wondering what HFES can do for you? As members, HFES is our organization, and the organization thrives when its members thrive. HFES functions because of its volunteers, including our Executive Council, committee leaders and committee members, just to name a few of the groups.

If you feel that HFES is missing something, it is probably missing you!

We invite you to get involved, share your vision and help to mold our organization to fit each individual’s needs. See the list below for different volunteer opportunities:

Help Organize the Titans of HFE Symposium

We are pleased to announce the return of the virtual Titans of HFE Symposium, taking place in February 2025. As we work on developing the one-day program, our focus is to honor many of our late Titans—individuals who made remarkable contributions to our Society and whose legacies are commemorated through our major awards.

Our goal is to dedicate a panel to each of these individuals, featuring 3-4 speakers who will discuss the contributions of our Titans over a 50-minute session. While the focus will be less on discussion, we hope to gather personal stories from those who knew them best.

We are seeking leads or co-leads for the panels dedicated to these Titans:

  • Etienne Grandjean
  • Oliver Keith Hansen
  • Jack A. Kraft
  • R. Lauer
  • Raymond S. Nickerson

As a lead, you would have the opportunity to select participants to join your panel. You can also send suggestions of individuals who would be great to be involved in any of these Titans discussions.

If you are interested in leading or participating in a panel for one of these distinguished individuals, please contact Kermit Davis, the chair of the Titans of HFE Symposium.

Call for Papers: Special Issue of Human Factors

Lessons Learned From COVID-19 From the Human Factors and Ergonomics Perspectives

This proposed special issue invites submissions of original theoretical and empirical works related to the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of all HF/E domains.

All submissions must explicitly demonstrate knowledge that yields design principles; enhances training, selection and communication; and ultimately improves human-system interfaces and sociotechnical systems that lead to safer and more effective outcomes.

The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2024.
