The Longfellow Read-a-Thon

Celebrating our students’ reading, raising needed funds



LAST DAY

Dear Longfellow parents and caregivers, 

Just before spring break, we shared news about school budget shortfalls, and extended our Read-a-Thon to give you additional time to collect pledges. Wow, did you respond! Our Longfellow Tigers community has raised almost $5,000 more since Open House!

We’re in the final push. We’ve raised $11,870. But we’re still working to meet our goal of $30,000. Students have completed their part: reading. Now we must do ours: collect pledges through April 15.

Parents and caregivers, we invite YOU to reach out even more widely. Consider family and friends you saw over spring break. Neighbors and colleagues. Use social media while protecting your students’ privacy by inviting DMs, then send them your student’s 99Pledges link. It takes a village, and this year, we need to broaden ours! 

We are working to replace both Title I funds and LCAP funds that are reduced for next year. While efforts are underway to find sources to replace some of these funds, these shortfalls significantly impact the school’s budget. This puts at risk essential mental health resources, math and reading support classes, and creates an uncertain future for our beloved Gardening/Cooking program. 

ALL the money we raise goes directly to supporting Longfellow students and services. YOU can help!

• Donate. If you haven’t already logged in to your student’s 99Pledges page, please check your email for the custom link; or go directly to 99pledges.com/fund/longfellow2024 and search for your student. If that doesn’t work, contact Abigail Paske (apaske@gmail.com) for help.

• Share. Forward a link to your student’s Read-a-Thon page far and wide. Be creative and resourceful, and give folks the chance to support our kids! 

• Be a Read-a-Thon Fairy. Show our readers that they have a community cheering them on by pledging to a student without other pledges. Go to bit.ly/LFreads and Principal Mitchell will match you with one or more student readers!

Estimadas familias y seguidores de Longfellow:

¡La PTA de Longfellow se complace en anunciar que extenderemos el Maratón de Lectura para brindarles a las familias tiempo adicional para recolectar donaciones para apoyar a nuestra comunidad escolar!

La fecha final para registrar el formulario de lectura de los estudiantes sigue siendo la misma: 31 de marzo. La fecha final para regresar las donaciones se ha extendido hasta el 15 de abril.

Padres y cuidadores, además de alentar a sus estudiantes con sus esfuerzos de lectura y recaudación de fondos, los invitamos a USTEDES a comunicarse con su red más amplia de amigos, colegas, vecinos y redes sociales. ¡Se necesita un pueblo, y este año necesitamos ampliar el nuestro!

The 2nd annual BUSD Climate Fair is a celebration of student learning around Climate Literacy. This year's fair will take place on Saturday, April 20 from 10am-2pm in the Longfellow Middle School cafeteria. The Climate Fair is a non-competitive showcase of middle school projects that explore the themes of climate change science, solutions and climate justice, the core pieces of BUSD’s Climate Literacy Resolution, passed in November 2021. This free event is open to the BUSD community. Come on by to celebrate Earth Day and BUSD's Climate Literacy program. In addition to the project showcase, the event will include hands-on activities for all ages, bike repair, music, food and prizes! We hope to see you there!

We are looking for parent volunteers to support this event. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete this volunteer interest form. Thank you!

Did you know up to 1 in 5 people have symptoms of dyslexia? 

The IDA writes: "As many as 15–20% of the population as a whole—have some of the symptoms of dyslexia, including slow or inaccurate reading, poor spelling, poor writing, or mixing up similar words. Not all of these will qualify for special education, but they are likely to struggle with many aspects of academic learning and are likely to benefit from systematic, explicit, instruction in reading, writing, and language."

Family Field Trip to a

Climate Book Talk

Dear Growth Hive Families, 

Here with an exciting invitation to share. When we return from Spring Break students will be learning about climate solutions in their Hive classes. This will culminate in a Climate Conference on Friday,  April 19, where students will attend workshops throughout the day related to climate solutions. It's going to be awesome!

As part of these festivities, Berkeley High (in partnership with Berkeley City College) is excited to welcome famed local author, Rebecca Solnit, to our community to talk about her new book, Not Too Late on Thursday, April 18 at 6pm. She will be giving a talk and signing books at Berkeley City College (BCC, just up the block from BHS) and will be interviewed by BHS student climate leaders from the Sunrise movement. 

The event is free and open to our whole community, you just need to register to reserve a spot. Here is the link to register for tickets. We look forward to seeing you there!  Tickets ARE limited for this event so if you want them, please reserve them now!

• We are excited to announce that the Berkeley Bay Festival will take place this year on April 27th from 11am – 4pm at Shorebird Park in the Berkeley Waterfront, 160 University Ave.  We have an exciting lineup of performers, over 30 educational exhibits, wonderful food vendors, free boat rides and the Adventure Playground. Please join us and spread the word !
• On April 20th, we will also host our annual Earth Day Cleanup at Shorebird Park from 9am – 12pm.
• Nature Journaling Class for our Saturday Naturalist Programs, May 25 from 10am – 12pm.
• Summer Camp Spaces at the Berkeley Marina Still Available!

We still have some spots available. Kindly inform your families that the priority registration for low-income families will end on April 24th. If they wait until after the 24th, they will have to pay the general Berkeley residence fee of $20 per child/session. Therefore, it is advisable to encourage them to register as soon as possible. Additionally, if any families have fifth graders who will be going into sixth grade, we offer a free summer camp called Achievers for incoming 6th to outgoing 8th graders. Please find the attached registration form.
