Composition Lab with

Isabel Ball


This two hour workshop will focus on developing our creative voice through composition. Together, we will build choreography using a variety of tools that include improvisation, writing, and discussion. There will be an opportunity to show work to each other at the end of the workshop and document what you create.

Isabel Ball (she/her) is a contemporary dance artist currently based in Portland, Maine. She grew up in the Chicagoland area, where she studied dance at the Chicago Academy for the Arts. After graduating with an honorary dance award, she completed her BFA in Contemporary Dance Performance with a minor in Psychology from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. In 2020, she joined the Little House Dance Company under the direction of Heather Stewart.

Isabel will perform in the 2024 Performing Arts Initiative Exhibition: In the Room by the Ocean on Sunday, August 18 in Rockport, Maine.

Beloved CBM teaching artist, friend, choreographer, and mentor Allie James has accepted a new position with Dance USA, which means a move out of state. We are thrilled for Allie as she embarks on this new adventure, but we will miss her dearly!

Alexandra James is a Southern Maine native, maker, mover, and mother. As an independent artist, she’s engaged with improvisation and interdisciplinary investigation, the interrogation of pedagogy and craft, seeking liberation through the integrity of embodied knowledge and the sharing of practice. In addition to her role at Casco Bay Movers, Alexandra serves as Bates Dance Festival’s Director of Training Programs and is a professor of dance at Colby & Bates College. Her work has been presented in Chicago, New York, and South Africa, with a teaching practice that carries her nationally. She earned her BFA from the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago in 2009.


CBM teaching artist and director of Ballet Bloom Project Rose Hutchins will present The Little Mermaid at The Hill Arts Center on August 9 and 10.

Portland Youth Dance Auditions

Portland Youth Dance (PYD) is the resident youth company at Casco Bay Movers, offering pre-professional dance training to dedicated dancers ages 10-18 years. PYD has three main tracks: Company, which focuses on modern, jazz, and contemporary forms; Crew, which focuses on hip hop forms; and PYD 2, an exploratory group geared toward dancers 10-18. PYD was founded in 1998 as an alternative to competitive dance and is a 501(c)(3) organization run by a volunteer Board of Directors.
