August 2024

Dear HCP4,

After a memorable summer, my husband, Adán, and I are preparing our three daughters to return to school on August 12th. My oldest daughter, Valentina, will be starting high school, which I can’t believe; it feels like yesterday I was rocking her to sleep.

Getting my daughters’ school supplies, putting them back into a routine, and updating their vaccines and vision exams, is what we are focused on at home.

At Precinct 4, my team and I are focused on all our children by ensuring they are receiving quality health care, creating safer environments, and providing community resources so they can have a successful school year.

Back-to-school season means focusing on preventative health measures, including ensuring our children are up to date on all their vaccinations. Precinct 4 just wrapped up our children’s immunization drive in partnership with the Ibn Sina Foundation on July 28th. Make sure to schedule any missed vaccinations or doctors' appointment to help keep you and our school communities healthy.

Safe environments are vital to nurturing and supporting the growth of our children. I’m excited about the progress Precinct 4 is delivering through our Sidewalks 4 Precinct 4 initiative —a $20 million investment building over 50 miles of sidewalks across the Precinct. My team and I are already more than halfway done, and these completed sidewalks are better connecting residents and children to schools, parks, and more.

It is even more important that our children have access to healthy food options to support their development. When I was a teacher, it broke my heart to see many of my students struggle with food insecurity, and we know how difficult it can be for some families to access and afford fresh produce. Precinct 4 is proud to bring the Houston Food Bank’s Kids Cafe Summer Meal Program to several of our community centers through August 9th. Children up to 18 years-of-age can enjoy a fresh, healthy and warm lunch daily. Please visit our community events page for more information.

We enjoyed hosting free summer camps for our children at Precinct 4 for the first time. And even though summer is coming to an end, the doors of our community centers are always open to support our families – even after school. Elementary school-aged children can join staff members every Tuesday throughout the year for homework help sessions at the Tracy Gee Community Center. Additionally, Freed Community Center will be hosting Family Fundamental Sports Clinics, where all can learn the basics of flag football, soccer, pickleball, archery, and more.

Lastly, I invite you to join us at Freed Park on August 9th at 6 p.m. for our backpack and school supply distribution, where the first 200 registered will receive a backpack. That day, we will also be hosting a movie night and kicking off the first public workshop for the Inner Northwest Community Plan, where we will gather community feedback on how we can transform the East Spring Branch, Lazybrook, and Timbergrove communities together.

Precinct 4 is always here as a resource, and we look forward to supporting you, and your family, this back-to-school season and beyond. My team and I wish all of our students a safe, enriching school year!

All my best,

Responding to Hurricane Beryl

Precinct 4 Opens Cooling Centers, Distribution Sites, and Clears Hundreds of Dump Trucks' Worth of Debris

Precinct 4 continues to serve our residents before, during, and after any storm. On July 8th, areas of the precinct were hit with a Category 1 hurricane, resulting in 5 to 10 inches of rainfall. Following the storm, over 1.67 million CenterPoint residents in Harris County were without power. The Precinct 4 team responded by collecting hundreds of dump trucks' worth of debris while also serving thousands of residents at cooling centers and distribution sites.
