More Than Cows and Plows: Lassen
4H Offers Unique Opportunities
4‑H, America’s largest youth development organization – empowering nearly six million young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime – has eight clubs in Lassen County, all with unique opportunities for kids.
For her Emerald Star Project, standout local 4-H and FFA member Katelyn Kirack is letting kids aged five to eighteen know that community service, public speaking and leadership are just a few of the many fun and educational activities that the Lassen County 4-H Youth Development Program offers its members while they compete, or participate, in county-wide events.
| |
|
As part of her project she created a poster with information and a survey for potential members. You can click here to take the survey, which will also enter you in a contest to win a paid membership for the year.
When you join a community club, you can make new friends, learn about raising animals, be involved in making a difference in our community, learn public speaking and record-keeping skills, participate in the Lassen County Fair and 4-H camp, create things for everyone to enjoy, and go on exciting trips.
How do you join? There are eight 4-H clubs in Lassen County. Pick a 4-H club you would like to join, then contact a club leader, or stop by the 4-H Office at 707 Nevada Street.
There will be a special 4H Open House August 20th, from 4:40 to 6:00p.m., at the Tractor Supply Store on Main Street in Susanville. Members will be on hand to do demonstrations and answer questions about 4H.

According to Midgely the Grand Marshal award is a century old tradition based on accomplishments and contributions to the community.
This year the award goes to both Gino Surian and Retired Brigadier General Richard C Bendix.
Gino Surian was born in Susanville, California to Alvise and Carmela Surian who were immigrants from Italy. When Gino was 11 years old, his father passed away and Gino’s mom did not speak English so Gino had to step in and help with his father’s business with his brothers which began his long career with the T&A Cocktail Lounge.
He retired this year after helping to run the longest owned and operated family business in Lassen County, he gave 65 years to the family business. Gino graduated from Lassen High School in 1966 where his team for the 880 relay still holds the record. He is a 10+ year pancreatic cancer survivor and a member of the Susanville Assembly of God Church.
Gino is very active in the community where he has played, coached and sponsored over 1000 local teams including wrestling, soccer, basketball, baseball and football. He ran the St. Jude’s Bike-A-Thon for multiple years and coached for crazy bowl which benefited the Lassen High School Football Program.
He has hosted many charity events at his business and has been a huge sponsor for many different organizations including: Northern California Cancer Advocates, Rocky Mountain Elk’s Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, ECV, Poker Runs, Lassen County Fair, Lassen Family Services, and various programs and teams at Lassen High School and Lassen Community College.
Retired Brigadier General Richard C Bendix is a 96-year-old retired Army veteran. He has resided in Susanville for the past 26 years and frequented the Lassen County and Eagle Lake area for 25 years prior to him calling this place home.
Richard, lovingly referred to as Dick, served in the U.S. Army for 37 years and achieved the rank of Brigadier General. His assignments included Korea, Germany and the Pentagon for 6 years. While at the Pentagon he was working for the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Dick is believed to be the oldest playing tympany player in the world. He also enjoys playing the drums and he has been playing with the Susanville Symphony since its inception which is almost 21 years. Dick recently finished a turkey hunt with his son, Brett and is an avid fisherman, gardener, hiker, hunter and world traveler. He attributes his secret to his amazing life to staying busy.

Sparks Rain On Town As Blazes Rage In Timber - Fire Burns Within Three Miles of Lassen County Lumber Town, 400 in Fight - Mill Property, County Hospital Endangered - Wingfield Ranch, Other Rich Holdings in Path of Devastating Fire
July 19, 1924
Sparks from a forest fire raging three miles from Susanville today endangered approximately 80 million feet of cured lumber, county buildings and other property within the town today.
Throughout the day the county hospital was sprinkled with water constantly to protect the building. The lumber yards of the two large companies were patrolled to guard against fire resulting from the falling sparks.
Driven before a brisk west wind, the flames burned an area of about eight square miles and were uncontrolled tonight.
Valuable timber lands, ranches and livestock are in the path of the fire.
Four hundred men were called from the town to battle the blaze when it was noticed at 11 o’clock this morning. They continued their efforts to check it tonight.
| |
|
A slackening of the wind this evening gave a respite to those who were protecting the town.
Provisions were sent from Susanville tonight for the firefighters on the fire line.
The fire is in government timber and three ridges have been burned over tonight, destroying valuable trees.
Logging equipment is in momentary danger and the Wingfield ranch not the property of the Lassen Lumber and Box company, on which is much thoroughbred stock seem doomed unless the fire is halted or the direction of the wind changes. Tonight the fire is within four miles of the ranch.
Mayfields at the edge of Susanville presents an added hazard to the lumber store here. Water wagons have been stationed at various points.
Besides the lumber yards and the county buildings, the Ramsey and Ridenour ranches are said to be threatened by the fire.
Dynamite stored by the county at the outskirts of Susanville was removed today due to fear of a possible explosion should the fire reach it.
The fire at Lassen (Janesville) which threatened the town yesterday was reported extinguished tonight.
