APRIL 2024

Our Community Working Together for Wildlife

One of Cape Cod’s most noticeable signs of Spring is the return of the Osprey to their nesting sites. Many of these beautiful birds fly over 3,000 miles each year to return here to raise their young. Osprey nests are enormous, and can weigh up to several hundred pounds. These tremendous nests perched high above with a commanding view, need a strong support to hold their weight. Osprey will often build them on top of active utility poles. This can be a very dangerous place for the Osprey and can also cause service issues for utility customers. We recently worked with Eversource to help an Osprey that was dangling from a utility pole in Orleans. They arrived on-site within 10 minutes of our call and shut down power to extricate the bird which suffered electrical burns. It was examined by Dr. Larry Venezia and is being closely monitored and cared for by our staff at Wild Care. We will keep you posted on this bird's progress!

Thank you to Eversource Energy Electric Operations Manager, Mike Pierce and his Crew: Shaune Perry, Josh Gerenia and Christian Trepanie for expertly and successfully extricating the Osprey. We could not have helped this bird without you.

Executive Director

BABIES! BABIES! BABIES!

Here are a couple of the recent babies in our nursery...

19 Eastern Gray Squirrels and Counting

We currently have received 19 orphaned Eastern Gray Squirrels in our nursery (and three Southern Flying Squirrels). Young squirrels are a lot of work... and depending on their age and health, they may require round-the-clock feedings. Baby squirrels can spend more than 12 weeks in our care. If you find a squirrel that you believe is orphaned, please don't feed it or give it water. Instead, give us a call. Squirrels make great moms and can often be reunited with their young. Please do not relocate mom. It is illegal to do so, and you could be leaving babies behind! Wild Care Helpline 508-240-2255

Spring Baby Season Brings Southern

Flying Squirrels

Southern Flying Squirrels are nocturnal mammals that make their nests in the cavities and hollows of trees. These tiny gliders are thriving in our care, and eating well. Please consider saving any tree-work til late fall after nesting season to avoid displacing animals like squirrels and owls.

Southern Flying Squirrels can be seen at bird feeders after dark, and while they don't actually fly, they have a special membrane between their front and back legs that they use to glide through the air between trees.

Wild Care Educational Eastern Screech Owl - Nickerson Receives

New 2024 Sponsorship

Thank you to Alan and Jill MacDonald for their generous sponsorship of Nickerson the Eastern Screech Owl in 2024! Jill is a member of the Nickerson family and Wild Care is very dear to her.

Nickerson is a gorgeous, inquisitive owl that has been at Wild Care since she was an owlet after she suffered an eye injury when her nesting tree was cut down in Nickerson State Park. She is part of our educational programming, and teaches the community about the importance of these beautiful animals in our environment.
