Golf Course Operators Meeting

In March, we hosted more than 70 basin golf course operators for an informational meeting to provide the latest updates with regards to management of water withdrawals and consumptive use for the industry. We want to thank those that attended for a great discussion, and we look forward to future conversations!

Water Quality Maps Updated

Our popular Basinwide Water Quality Index maps have been updated with data through 2023. Discover the water quality of streams and rivers near you, based on nine common parameters that represent impacts from metals, nutrients and development. More than 4,000 samples have been added to the database.

There's also a Biological Index Map that was created using the Chesapeake Bay Basinwide Index of Biotic Integrity (Chessie BIBI). Commission scientists use the Chessie BIBI to score each macroinvertebrate sample collected. The map displays biological conditions throughout the basin.

Podcasts & Webinars

SRBC Project Review Manager Todd Eaby chats with Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper John Zaktansky in his podcast series. Todd looks back at his 15 years so far with the Commission and discusses how water withdrawal permits work for a wide variety of industrial needs across the watershed.

"We use data to evaluate what quantities are available and can be used without adverse impacts to other users or the environment."

In the same way police use DNA to identify individuals in a crime, SRBC scientists are using eDNA (environmental DNA) to track their own “bad guys” – invasive fish species in the basin. SRBC Aquatic Biologist Luanne Steffy explains the methods, gear and best practices her team is using as they lead the way with this valuable monitoring technique. Thanks to the State Museum of PA for this Learn at Lunchtime opportunity.

The Southern Tier New York Susquehanna Basin Monitoring Collaborative (Collaborative) has been approved to receive annual funding through July 2028. The SRBC has partnered with Southern Tier 8 (ST8) and Southern Tier Central (STC) boards, as well as Dickinson College’s Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM) to complete the work, in coordination with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Upper Susquehanna Coalition, and the Upper Susquehanna Conservation Alliance.

The program will focus on surface water monitoring to support statewide water quality reporting, planning and implementation, local and regional water quality goals, and broader Chesapeake Bay pollutant reduction goals.

We created a webpage dedicated to the Collaborative’s activities, calendar and announcements. From the site, you can also access an interactive dashboard of all water quality monitoring sites and corresponding data.
