HOLY WEEK & EASTER WORSHIP SERVICES

Please join us for Holy Week and Easter services. We will celebrate Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday here at St. Bart's. The Easter Vigil service will be at St. Luke's in Portland.

We welcome Bishop Brown to St. Bart's as he helps lead worship on Good Friday.

Maundy Thursday

March 28, 5:30 pm at St. Bart's Church

Maundy Thursday commemorates the night when Jesus gave his great commandment --

that we love one another -- and instituted the Lord's Supper (Communion).

Come and celebrate with us as we remember these gifts of grace.

Led by the Rev. Amanda Gerken-Nelson

Good Friday

March 29, 5:30 pm at St. Bart's Church

This is the evening we remember Jesus' trial and death on the cross.

Join us for a service of scripture, music, and poetry.

Led by the Rev. Amanda Gerken-Nelson and the Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Brown

The Great Vigil of Easter

March 30, 7 pm at the Cathedral of St. Luke

The community of St. Bart's will be joining the wider Episcopal and ecumenical communities

of Portland for a shared Easter Vigil at the Cathedral of St. Luke (State St., Portland).

Let us come together as a community of believers to tell, once again,

the stories of our faith and to anticipate the joy of Easter morning.

Easter

March 31, 9:30 am at St. Bart's Church

Jesus is risen! Join our community for a festive Eucharist to celebrate Jesus' resurrection.

Led by the Rev. Amanda Gerken-Nelson

Calling All Children!

It has been reported that a famous bunny may leave eggs somewhere inside St Bart’s on Sunday. We’ll need some kids to help find them. Please stay after the service and join the "Easter Egg Hunt!"

Masks are optional.

Need hearing assistance? We have earpieces that receive audio from the sound system. You can find them in charging stations in the entryway. Simply slip the earpiece over your ear, turn it on with the volume switch, and adjust volume. Please return to the charging stations when you are done.

Good Friday Offering

Since 1922, members of The Episcopal Church in the United States have supported the Anglican Communion Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East by taking a special offering on Good Friday. The generous donations of Episcopalians help the Christian presence in the Land of the Holy One to be a vital and effective force for peace and understanding among all of God’s children.

In his recent appeal to Episcopalians in the United States, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry wrote: "By supporting life-giving ministries in the province, including St. George’s [Anglican Episcopal Church in] Baghdad; the eye clinic in Ras Morbat, Yemen; the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza; and numerous other institutions identified by their dioceses, you are ensuring that our siblings in Christ are not forgotten."

This year, St. Bart's is participating in the Good Friday Offering by donating all gifts offered in the offering plate on Good Friday to the Good Friday Offering. If you plan to write a check, please put "Good Friday Offering" in the memo line. If you cannot join us in-person on Friday, gifts may be made through the St. Bart's website by going to the "Donate" page and then clicking "Good Friday Offering" in the "Fund" drop down menu. You can also mail a check to the church. (Please be sure to note "Good Friday Offering" in the memo line.)

New Members Sunday: April 7th!

Are you considering becoming a member of St. Bart's? Hooray! Rev. Amanda will be welcoming new members during the Sunday morning service on April 7th. Those who would like to participate and be formally welcomed as members of the congregation should email Amanda or Anne Berg and Susie Soule from the Membership Committee.

A reminder that membership is not a requirement to participate in the ministries of St. Bart's. Membership status, though, signifies a commitment to the vitality and sustainability of our ministries through thoughtful engagement, participation in decision-making, and contributions of time, talents, and treasure.

Questions can also be directed to Amanda, Anne, or Susie.

Looking for Assistance with a Move

Saturday, April 6

Hello friends –

Great news, Nela and her family have found long term housing in Yarmouth.

The move date is Saturday April 6th, 9:00 am (within Yarmouth)

What I need from you:

  • I will rent a U-Haul, but I will not be able to back it into Nela’s driveway – so I need a volunteer who is comfortable driving a small U-Haul. Please reach out to me directly if this is you .

  • Should be an ‘easy’ move (if there is such a thing). Totes and boxes are always helpful.

  • Nela has some furniture, but still needs:

· Kitchen chairs (she has a table)

· Electric, stackable washer/dryer

· She will have additional needs, but these will be easier for her to assess once she has moved in.

Please email or text me to get the address and to let me know you are available; it is great to know that help is on the way!

Thank you all in advance for everything that you do to help so many.

On Sunday, April 21 following the morning service, the Endowment Committee will offer a short presentation on the St. Bart’s endowment to anyone interested in learning more about the fund. We will briefly cover the background of the fund, it’s purposes and current status, and tax efficient ways to donate to the fund. All members are invited to attend.  For more information see or call Ed Simmons or Bill Macleod.

April/May Book-of-Two-Months-Club

Because we say the Lord’s Prayer together every week, perhaps we forget to wonder about its origin and meaning. It’s a prayer most of us learned as children, although its language is anything but childish! The Lord’s Prayer will be the focus of St. Bart’s Book of Two Months Club in April and May, as we read and discuss The Greatest Prayer: Rediscovering the Revolutionary Message of the Lord’s Prayer, by noted Jesus scholar John Dominic Crossan.

Conversations facilitated by Sukie Curtis will take place on ZOOM, Tuesdays April 30 and May 28 from 7 to 8:30 pm. Dr. Crossan (who just turned 90!) will join our conversation on May 28. The Greatest Prayer is a brief but potent book, marked by Crossan’s scholarly precision and breadth and his trademark humor. Join this exploration and hearthe Lord’s Prayer with new understanding! Contact Sukie Curtis to register or with questions (sukiecurtis@gmail.com).

2ND ANNUAL ST. BART’S DAY OF SERVICE

SAVE-THE-DATE: Saturday, May 4, 2024

We welcome all parishioners to participate in our 2nd Annual St. Bart’s Day of Service! This is a collaborative way of expanding our outreach and generating interest and momentum for serving our communities via local organizations. Many members of St. Bart’s already volunteer their time by working with organizations like Friendship House and St. Elizabeth’s Essentials Pantry. Some of us hear about these things, but don’t know how or when to get involved, or admittedly, we might be nervous about volunteering on our own without knowing anyone. The Day of Service is a specific day designed to help address those concerns and bridge that gap.

All you have to do is choose which of the 4 organizations you’d like to volunteer with for the day and sign up to attend. If transportation is a challenge, we can help organize carpools since a whole group of St. Bart’s folks will be volunteering together at each location. This year’s Day of Service is set for Saturday, May 4th. The times for volunteering vary based on location. At 1:00 pm, all participants are invited to come back to St. Bart’s for a cookout and casual fellowship to share about their volunteer experience.

Leading up to the Day of Service, a representative from each organization will come to separate Sunday services in April to share with the parish more about what their group is and does and what volunteering will look like. We hope that information will help you decide which organization to volunteer with on the Day of Service.

This event is brought to you by a joint effort of the Outreach Committee, Fellowship Committee, and Youth Education Committee. Sign-ups will begin in April. If you have questions, please contact Catherine Richards (cmrolney@comcast.net), Peter Sillin (sillin@gmail.com), or Pal Covie (palcovie@gmail.com).
