Still Waters Adult Day Center News & Updates
Still Waters Adult Day Center is a person centered, faith based, and activity rich center for our seniors. We provide a safe place Monday - Friday for seniors to engage with other seniors to encourage social, emotional, and physical well-being.
Alzheimer's Foundation of America
Thank you to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America for their generous donation to Still Waters to help support our music therapy program. We offer music therapy twice weekly at the center. Music therapy offers many benefits especially for those in varying stages of dementia. Studies show music therapy improves focus, improves their ability to communicate with those close to them, and may lower their dependence on psychiatric drugs. We are so grateful that they too see the need to support our music program at Still Waters. If you are looking for some great resources on Alzheimer's and Dementia for caregivers visit their website. AFA provides a wide variety of resources for Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers. Whether you are just starting out on your journey with Alzheimer’s or dementia, or have been on the journey for a while, they are here for you. No one is alone on their journey.
Women's Fund of Central Indiana - A CICF Fund
Women's Fund believes that when a woman is successful, her community is strengthened.
Women’s Fund of Central Indiana is highly regarded as the most influential organization creating transformative and sustainable change for women and girls in central Indiana. We received funding to design care workshops weekly specifically for our ladies to address relaxation, socialization, and stress relief. Our goal with adding additional programs will help our ladies with depression, address stress, social isolation, and increase physical activities. This funding will also help us expand our caregiver support to include monthly women only education and activities to address mental health with this high-risk group.

Caregiver Spotlight- Donna and Vince
In 2012 Vince suffered a head injury from as a result of a traffic accident. Many reports find that head injury is a significant risk factor for dementia, especially in younger people and men. It causes the brain to move violently within the skull, leading to problems with thinking, memory, concentration, mood and behavior.
After many tests and doctor visits Vince was diagnosed with dementia. From 2012 to 2022 they didn't let that diagnosis effect their lifestyle. They still went on vacations and loved spending time together. They cherished their time together!
After COVID, Donna noticed a decline and knew she needed help. A few neighbors suggested Still Waters for Vince. She came for a tour and realized that both her and Vince needed Still Waters.
As Donna states, 'Still Waters helps me have time to myself. Vince has always been a social person, so he thrives at Still Waters. Every day when I pick him up, he is happy and smiling! We started with 2 days and saw the success and increased it to 3 days."
Donna is always a ray of sunshine when she comes to Still Waters. Even on the toughest days she comes in with a smile and a sense of humor. She has been an inspiration with other caregivers and Seniors at our Preparing to Grow old series and our Coffee Hour.
This quote reminds me of Donna, "Keep your face always toward the sunshine- and shadows will fall behind you." Walt Whitman
Donna's face is always facing the sun!
Join us for coffee hour at Still Waters, Jan 17th, 9:30am-11am
Our first coffee hour was such a success. The group decided to meet monthly. Our next coffee hour is Wednesday, Jan 17 at 9:30am. This is a group of current and previous caregivers that enjoy creating friendships and laughs with others. Join us for a cup of coffee and a treat while chatting with others. Please drop in anytime during the coffee hour. This is a safe space for you to feel less alone and receive mutual support from others.

Garden Expansion - Volunteer Support Needed
This past summer we were blessed to receive funding from AARP to expand our existing garden. The garden supported our center and the community. The Shamrock Garden Club saw the success of our expansion and will be working with us this coming year to expand our garden to include flowers! We are so excited to have the volunteer support from this group to include fresh cut flowers to our garden.
But we are in need of two additional beds for the flowers. If you know anyone who is interested in helping us build two additional beds, please let me know. This would be a great Boy Scout or Girl Scout project!
Please share this with others.

Aging Well: In a Holistic Lens
Art Exhibit I Conversation I Meditation

Join visiting artist Julie McColly Hill for our winter wellness series. To launch the series, Julie will share a collection of art panels that she created for the Living Well With Dementia Conference held last spring in Indianapolis. This eight-panel exhibit features two sets of images. In the first set, the artist applies a holistic perspective to unpack the meaning of Dementia Friendly Environments using the language of symbols. The second set of images is a multi-media abstract expression of the first set. The inspiration for the abstract re-interpretation came from Julie’s personal experience as a caregiver.

Julie’s mother was one of the first participants at Still Waters. She and her family successfully applied this “holistic perspective of aging well” to navigate difficult family conversations and decisions regarding her mother's plan of care. With hindsight, Julie also credits routine meditation practice as being instrumental in managing the stress of balancing work, family, and the role of caregiver.

This winter, Julie will lead a routine meditation practice on Tuesdays from 3-4:30p.m. During each session participants will explore a variety of meditation techniques and discover the foundational difference of the eastern and western approach to medicine. Suitable for people of all ages and perfect for beginners, this meditation practice is intended to be an introduction to the mind, body, spirit connection. The program is free and open to the general public. Reserve your spot today.
