Attention Young Anglers: Annual Junior Fishing Derby Happens May 17th
One of Susanville’s best-loved traditions, the annual Lassen Sportsmens Club Junior Fishing Derby along Paiute Creek and the Susan River, is scheduled to be held May 17th, and kids aged 2 to 15 are invited to come enjoy a beautiful morning of fishing. The derby is co-sponsored by the City of Susanville, the County of Lassen and the Susanville Indian Rancheria.
This year’s Derby is dedicated to Tina Rich, a long-time supporter of the Junior Fishing Derby.
| | |
The busy morning starts at 5:30 with free registration and check-in at the park. Don’t forget to dress warmly because mornings are still chilly along the river this time of year. Registration and check-in end at 9:00a.m.
Derby prizes will be awarded after the 3:00p.m. close of the event, and winners don’t need to be present to win. Kids shooting for the ‘largest fish’ prizes should be off the river by 2:45p.m. and must be in line for weigh-in by 3:00p.m to qualify. Door prizes will be drawn at the same time and for these winners must be present.
The first three hundred kids to register will receive a souvenir Derby Hat courtesy of
Guess Plumbing.
There will be a special prize for the Largest Fish caught by a 15-year-old. A fly rod, reel and line built by Elegant Iris & Men’s Den courtesy of Katie Anderson.
This year kids in the 6 to 15 year-old age group have a chance to win bicycles from Susanville Grocery Outlet, a rod and reel from Western Nevada Supply or tackle boxes from Lassen County Federal Credit Union.
For the 2 to 5 year-old fisher-folk prizes include bicycles from Zaengles Home and Carpet, rod and reel from Western Nevada Supply and tackle boxes from Lassen County Federal Credit Union.
There will also be sportsmanship prizes sponsored by the Dieter family and Bill Kauffman.
From 6:00 to 8:30 free breakfast for all kids, sponsored by WalMart and the employees of WalMart. From 10:30 to 1:00p.m., free lunch will be provided for all kids, sponsored by Frosty Mill; Susanville Supermarket; Alpine Beverage; Burger King; Diamond Mountain Mini-Mart and Grillin’ by Greg Sella.
Adults may have breakfast or lunch for a donation of $2.00.

Susanville Police Warn of Safety Concerns Regarding ‘Senior Assassin’ Game
The Susanville Police Department issued a public safety notice Friday regarding a popular high school tradition, a game known as Senior Assassin, which has recently been discussed within the local community. The game, according to SPD Officer Fred Foulk, involves students using water-based toy weapons to “eliminate” other participants over several days or weeks, often in public areas and residential neighborhoods.
While acknowledging the game as a fun, non-violent activity, the department urges students and families to prioritize safety and consider the broader public impact.
Concerns include:
| | |
-
Toy weapons being mistaken for real firearms: This can lead to dangerous situations, especially in fast-moving or unclear scenarios.
-
Entering private property without permission: This can cause alarm and result in legal consequences.
-
Distracted or reckless driving: Particularly when attempting to avoid being “tagged,” endangering all road users.
-
Wearing masks, hoodies, or disguises: This can lead to misunderstandings, especially during emergencies.
The Susanville Police Department strongly advises:
- Avoiding playing in or around sensitive locations: This includes schools, roadways, businesses, and government buildings.
- Clearly marking all toy weapons: Distinguish them from real firearms with bright colors, visible labels, etc.
- Refraining from any behavior that could be interpreted as threatening: This includes aggressive or intimidating actions.
- Respecting all laws: Including trespassing and curfew regulations.
- Informing parents, neighbors, and local authorities: About the game’s nature and timeline, if participating.
Officer Foulk says, “Let’s work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable spring season for everyone.”
