Guest speaker: Dr. John Freeman (Intrinsyx Bio): Library Ellipse Gallery from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Topic: The Molecular Biology of Microbial Endophytes used for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Remediation. Dr. Freeman has led research at Purdue University, Colorado State University, USDA-ARS Water Management Research Division, Fresno State's Center for Irrigation Technology and Biology Department, NASA-Ames Research Center, Intrinsyx Environmental and Intrinsyx Bio.

The 45th Annual Central California Research Symposium will be held at the Resnick Student Union from 8 a.m - 4 p.m., featuring presentations in the following formats: 12-minute oral presentation or poster presentation. The event showcases the diverse range of impressive research projects and provides opportunities for students to share their research and develop presentation skills.

Three-Minute Thesis (3MT): 1-3 p.m.; Graduate Student Success Center (GSSC) - Library | 2nd floor Room 2119. During each competition, students will have three minutes to present a compelling discussion on their research topic, including its significance and relevance, to the general public. The top two winners will be invited to the virtual CSU Grad Slam Competition on May 3.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Francesca Hopkins (UC Riverside): 10-11 a.m.; Library Ellipse Gallery. Dr. Hopkins studies the effects of human activities on the global carbon cycle from an interdisciplinary earth system science perspective, with particular interest in greenhouse gas emissions in urban and agricultural environments. She is passionate about communicating the science of climate change, and co-founded CLEAN education, a nonprofit organization to teach climate science in schools.

Outstanding Faculty Publications: 3:30-5 p.m.; Library Ellipse Gallery. Join us as we wrap up Research Week with a celebration of Fresno State faculty’s contributions as scholars and researchers. The reception will be at 3:30 p.m., with a short program at 4 p.m., and the exhibit will be in the Ellipse balcony from April 5-23.

Margaret Ellis (Plant Science) received a $25,000 grant from Cotton Incorporated for her project, "Identification and characterization of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (FOV) races on disease development in cotton 2024."

Amber Crowell/Andy Levine (Sociology) received a $167,779 grant from the James Irvine Foundation for their project, "Economic Opportunity Landscape Analysis of Central Valley Communities."

William Arce (English) received a $5,000 grant from the California Humanities for his project, "The Hispanic Student Veteran’s Initiative."

Cory Brooks (Chemistry and Biochemistry) was appointed the new Editor-in-Chief of the bimonthly journal Monoclonal Antibodies in Immunodiagnosis and Immunotherapy. “Dr. Brooks' research into nanobodies and cancer immunotherapy places him at the forefront of new technologies in antibody design and protein engineering,” said former Editor-In-Chief Dr. Thomas Kieber-Emmons.

Gitima Sharma (Counselor Education and Rehabilitation) received an invitation from Stanford University to engage in an academic exchange with a group of top eight scholars who are dedicated to advancing research on purpose. Her published research focuses on pedagogical practices that can strengthen students and educators’ inherent capacity as citizens of the world advancing positive change.

Patricia D. López (Curriculum and Instruction) presented during a March 7 webinar on "Institutionalizing Your Grant Project," hosted by the U.S. Department of Education’s HSI Division. Her presentation, "Sustaining People, Sustaining Change," featured highlights, challenges and lessons learned from Fresno State’s Enseñamos en el Valle Central program.

Sangeeta Bansal (Plant Science) co-published the article, “Impacts of stocking densities on soil biochemical and microbial properties” in the Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems Journal, Jan. 2024.

Sam Lankford (Recreation Administration) received the California Park and Recreation Society Service Award of Excellence in the category of Outstanding Research. He was recently recognized at the CPRS Connections Conference in Palm Springs.

Pa Nhia Xiong (Social Work Education) published “Worth the Sacrifices of Hmong Soldiers: Hmong Uplifting Hmong Out of Poverty - A Mixed Method Study and Comparison of Hmong Communities in California, Minnesota and Wisconsin” in a special issue of Hmong Studies Journal focusing on Hmong Americans in the 2020 Census.

INTERNAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES | |
Claude C. Laval III Award for Innovative Technology and Research: This award has supported the development of innovative technology and related research at the university. Funding for the $5,000 award is provided by a gift to the university from Mr. and Mrs. Claude C. Laval III. All currently enrolled full-time undergraduate and graduate Fresno State from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply. Each student applicant must list a faculty mentor in their application. Award will be made to the student applicant; faculty are not eligible to apply as the primary applicant. Apply via InfoReady by May 17.

The Claude C. Laval III Award for Commercialization of Research, Innovation and Creativity supports Fresno State students and faculty whose scholarly activities are focused on commercialization of intellectual property, innovation and creativity. The award is not intended to support basic research or the early stages of innovative idea generation. Applications are invited from full-time faculty and students at Fresno State who have an interest in pursuing the next steps towards technology transfer, commercialization and entrepreneurship. Lisa Bryant (Political Science) was quoted in The Journalist's Resource on the barriers to voting registration due to the costly and time-consuming requirements needed to register.

Luca Brillante (Viticulture and Enology) helped arrange for the International Viticulture and Enology Society to host meetings at Fresno State as part of its annual conference on Feb. 27. Over 40 representatives from around the world focused on ways to improve viticulture and enology research review and publications.

Candace Egan (Media, Communications and Journalism) has won two prestigious Awards of Merit from The Accolade Global Film Competition. The awards were given for Egan’s documentary shorts, “Untold Stories: The Portuguese Festa in Central California” and “Sierra Odyssey: Orland Bartholomew’s Historic Winter Adventure in the Sierra Nevada Mountains,” which were both directed by Egan and produced by MCJ Production Services.

Nupur Hajela (Physical Therapy) delivered an invited presentation at the Heritage, Health & Healing Mini-Conference & Networking Event on Feb 10. Her presentation was titled, "Redefining Neurorehabilitation in Parkinson’s Patients with Virtual Reality (VR), Telehealth and Remote Therapeutic Monitoring."
