Mountain Page Theater is pleased to announce auditions for our fall production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

The show has little spoken dialogue; it is completely sung-through. Its family-friendly storyline, universal themes and catchy music have resulted in numerous productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; according to the Really Useful Group, by 2008 more than 20,000 schools and amateur theatre groups had successfully put on productions. Joseph is an extremely energy-driven show. For those thinking of auditioning; don’t be afraid to throw all your energy into your audition, you can’t go too far! Many voices and movements are necessary for the creative team to make casting and callback decisions, so make sure you commit to everything you do during your audition. This entire show is nothing but singing and can only be believable because of the actor’s heightened emotion. This show’s performance dates are December 5, 6, 7 8, 12,14, and 15.

Recollection of a Guided Meditation with Father

Tyler Kline

The deer approaches the feeder

like a man late to church,

careful not to make any noise.

In the lowering light, I still

see her spine: ridge of pockmarked ash.

Rain rot, a friend once told me

when I had come to see his horses.

Only closer can I spot the flies

forming their dark constellations

across her storm-beaten fur;

the still defeat of her tail

hanging like a rag out the window

of an abandoned car.

On the nightly news, a scientist

is explaining some rare bacteria

that lives only at the bottom of the sea.

Soon the Titanic will disappear completely

she states not as a possibility, but fact.

I think of my father sitting

on a yoga mat last spring.

When I told him to breathe,

picture a green field and then

himself in it, each body part

a petal descending to the ground,

my father asking softly—

Even my eyes?

Tyler Kline is a writer from Pennsylvania. His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Best New Poets, Colorado Review, Denver Quarterly, Harpur Palate, and Sixth Finch, among other places. He’s currently pursuing his MFA at New York University where he is a Jan Gabrial Fellow.

Swimming

-submitted by Jennifer Ramsey

The cool water flows past my face; the only sounds are the quiet splashing as my hands enter the water and the bubbles created by my exhale. Tiny minnows dart out of my path to hide in the rocks along the shore of the lake.

I wait all year for this - the first open water swim of the season! I meet my teammates from Greenville Splash Masters at Lake Jocassee. Not quite as convenient as when I lived steps from the beach in New York, where from May to October I would walk up to the boardwalk and meet my friends for an early morning swim, followed by egg sammies or bagels and coffee in our sand chairs. There is something to be said, however, about clean, clear lake water and new friendships.

Swimming is so many things to me. Obviously, it is a way to stay in shape that I can continue as I age. I have known swimmers that continue into their 80s and beyond! It is also very social. Although we are solitary as we are stroking, there is quite a bit of chatter while we are on the pool deck or the shore. There are plenty of opportunities to meet up with actual clothes on as well!

Perhaps the greatest benefit is that, for me, swimming is a form of moving meditation, similar to solitary hiking or walking a labyrinth. In the pool, instead of worrying about all the things I have to do, the argument I had earlier, or any of the other dozens of things racing through my mind, I have to focus on counting laps and being aware of my times. That leaves no room for intrusive thoughts! To make sure I get the most out of my swims, I am also being mindful of my form, technique, and breathing, listening to my body and making necessary adjustments. And, at the close of each session, I feel gratitude for the opportunity to engage in an activity that is so fulfilling, and I thank my body for all of its hard work.

Back at the lake, I am channeling my inner minnow, attempting to mirror the streamlined movement of their bodies. After several hundred yards, I flip over and channel the otter as the interplay of cold water and warm sunlight on my face successfully chases the remainder of my cares away.

Community News

From the publisher:

One of the enjoyable, and there are many, aspects of publishing our newsletter is the feedback I get from people who appreciate reading it and acknowledge all the ways it impacts their lives for the better. Thank you to all the people who take the time to express their appreciation of Saluda.

To give people a specific method of communicating those appreciations, I am following up on an idea from Laura Fields. I am calling this new addition to the newsletter simply, Feedback.

My hope is that you will use it as an opportunity to share with us something about Saluda that you find particularly wonderful and inspiring. It might be something you read in the newsletter, a great hike you took, a musical group you heard, a meal you enjoyed or an artist you encountered, or anything really, that touched or affected you in way you wish to share with us.

This is the beginning of Feedback.

From Laura Fields

I look forward to reading Cappy Hall Rearick’s prose in every edition. She inspires me, she gives me reason to pause, think, and laugh. She is delightful and as long as she is willing to contribute, I'll be a supporter of her prose.

Thanks for letting me share.

Hello ladies in business! I’d like to officially announce our new, bi-monthly, category-exclusive networking group. Excuse Us While We Succeed® (EUWWS) is a society for female entrepreneurs that supports new and seasoned women in business, or anyone that has that dream. We seek to create an authentically supportive environment for business, community, and personal growth.

In this networking group we will come together and explore business honestly. It is important to efficiently utilize your time by actively supporting the businesses within our group.

Category exclusive means that we will only have one member in the group for each job category. This allows our members to make better referrals by getting to know one representative in each category.

Once you have claimed your seat, it is yours as long as you follow our other policies. https://www.excuseus.org/membership for all the details and to reserve your seat!

The Saluda Pantry would like to offer our deep gratitude to the Lake Hosea community!

Inspired by reading about the “Food Lion Feeds” grant we recently received, one of our volunteers decided to launch a fundraiser of his own. By generously offering a matching donation of $1000, he and his partner encouraged their neighbors to contribute to the Pantry. In just one day their efforts raised over $2000 and helped spread awareness about food insecurity in our communities.

What a beautiful example of how a small group of people can make a very big difference.

If you want to donate to the Saluda Pantry or would like ideas on how you or your community organization can fundraise for us, please contact Kerri at kpelz@saludapantry.com

A LIE WILL SUFFICE

That’s the title of a very entertaining book by the grandson of a notorious Sicilian mafia don. The author, a retired judge from Texas, Jay Wilkinson, is coming to Saluda to give a fun talk about his book. Saluda Sister City is bringing this FREE event to town as part of our mission to expose Saludians to different cultures…and this one is REALLY DIFFERENT! Come learn about Jay’s grandfather’s involvement in murder, extortion, bootlegging, and more. It happened in Sicily and later in New Orleans.

We’ll start at 4 o’clock on Wednesday, July 17, in Saluda Outfitters’ new indoor performance space. Come early to meet Jay and purchase a special Italian cocktail and appetizer the Outfitter is creating for the occasion. Stay on for dinner if the mood hits. We have limited seating so go to our website at saludasistercity.org and sign up.

Jay’s mother told him: “One day, you’re gonna write a book about my family, and it won’t be so pretty. Why all the secrets? Why all the lies?”

Join Sister City at The Community Table

Sister City Board members are cooking a great fresh Italian dinner, “Pasta Fresca,” accompanied by the famous Wildflour Bake Shop Italian focaccia. Join us July 23 at Saluda Senior Center (5:30-7:00) and meet our Italian summer exchange students, Nora Criscio and Marta Pignatelli.

Caesar Salad

July 4th was also the 100th birthday of the famous Italian “Caesar Salad.”  It was created in 1924 by Caesar Cardinei, an Italian immigrant living in Tijuana, Mexico. The original restaurant where it was created is still open! It has evolved over the years. To listen to or read a short story about its history and get a recipe for classic Caesar salad, type this into your browser: “NPR Caesar Salad.”

For any questions, contact Judy Thompson at 828-489-6578 or JD@JDThompsonLaw.com. Visit our website at saludasistercity.org and sign up for the every-other-month newsletter so you don’t miss anything.

On Tuesday, July 23 from 5:30-7pm at the Saluda Senior Center, Saluda Community Table and Saluda Sister City will partner to create a celebration feast in honor of Nora Criscio and Marta Pignatelli, two students visiting from Carunchio, Italy!

Join us as we combine our culinary talents to serve you a very special international meal! The Sister City board will prepare one of the girls’ favorite Italian dishes—Pasta Fresca with sliced chicken (optional) and Italian bread. Our SCT bakers tickle your taste buds with a selection of our most requested desserts including chocolate lasagna, key lime pie, red velvet cake, and other treats.

Come hungry and bring your plate, utensils, & cups, if possible. Meals are always free, with donations very much appreciated. Designated Handicap Drop Off/Pick Up is located at the front door. Parking is available around the Center, at the Railroad Tracks, and the Methodist Church.
