Family Food Sort Volunteers

Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano

Date/Time: Saturday, April 6, 8:30–10:30 a.m., or 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Location: Solano Warehouse, 2370 North Watney Way, Fairfield.

Ages: Families with children between the ages of five and ten years old are welcome to volunteer. Each family must sign up separately.

Time Commitment: Two-hour shifts.

The mission of the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is to lead the fight to end hunger in partnership with our community and in service to our neighbors in need. We distribute food directly at community sites throughout Contra Costa and Solano and indirectly through our partner nonprofit organizations.

Families with children as young as five years old are invited to a family volunteer opportunity on select Saturdays and Sundays in our Food Bank warehouses. Families will bag fresh produce for the Community Produce Program. We will screen your application and contact you to confirm your reservation. Everyone in your application must be from the same household and must be able to work close to one another in order to be approved. You will be socially distanced from members of other households while in our facilities. These opportunities are specifically geared to include families with children between five and ten years old.

Please observe the following guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of your group:

  • Arrive on time and plan to stay for your entire shift.
  • Closed-toe shoes and long pants are mandatory (tennis shoes are fine).
  • Masks are optional during volunteer shifts.
  • The warehouse temperature can vary. We recommend dressing in layers.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the warehouse or sorting area.
  • All volunteers must be scheduled. No walk-ins are allowed.

Contact: Registration is required and is available online. All volunteers must be scheduled. When you click to express interest in participating in a Family Food Sort Day, you will be required to tell us how many children (and their ages) and how many adults are in your group. After submitting your Express Interest request, please wait for an official confirmation from us. You will be notified if there is space for your group, or if the shift is full and you have been placed on the waiting list.
Earth Day - Candlestick Point State Recreation Area

California State Parks Foundation

Date/Time: Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Location: Candlestick Point State Recreation Area. Full opportunity address and directions will be sent to you by e-mail after you sign up.

Ages: Families with children ten years old and older are welcome to participate. Minors must be accompanied by an adult and bring a waiver signed by their guardian.

Time Commitment: Four hours.

Offering panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, Candlestick Point State Recreation Area is the first park developed to bring state park values into the urban setting and offers various recreational opportunities for visitors. Rabbits, hawks, brown pelicans, and other native wildlife call this place home. During World War II, the United States Navy filled the tidelands to create the nearby Naval Shipyard. Today, the park sits on part of this former landfill and demonstrates how major land changes affect ecologically sensitive areas. Support invasive plant removal at Hermit’s Cove! This part of the park has large swaths of land covered by ice plant (Carpobrotus edulis) and glasswort (Salsola soda) which are invasive species that can cause erosion and overwhelm the ecosystem's native plants. This project will allow native species such as hairy gumplant (Grindelia hirsutula) and silver burr ragweed (Ambrosia chaminssonis) to thrive and protect biodiversity.
