AND NOW FOR THE REAL NEW

REAL NEWS FROM

SLIM'S SHADY TRAILER PARK

I wrote a screenplay. I Got You Babe. It's won a few awards.

Last summer, I was hanging out at Melrose Studios in Palm Springs (CA), working on a song for the soundtrack from the yet-to-be-made movie.

The song is called Superhero. In the movie, a Cher impersonator lip-synchs to the song for the big show-stopping finale.

So I needed someone in real life who sounds like Cher so the actor could do the lip-synching scene.

I did some digging and found a Cher impersonator (Lisa McClowry) who sounds just like Cher. She does a Cher Tribute show called The Beat Goes On that tours the world.

Lisa did an amazing job on Superhero. Check it out!

Now all I needed was a voiceover in the middle of the tune. I wanted someone to say, "Look! Up in the sky!" like they used to do in the old Superman TV show intro.

So I asked my friend Marc McClure to do it. Why Marc?

Well, he's an actor. And Marc played Jimmy Olsen in the early Superman movies.

And he nailed his 5-word monologue. And I inserted it into the Superhero song.

As we were mixing the song at Melrose, Marc mentioned he had a keyboard and a box of microphones he wanted to give away. He asked me if I needed any of that stuff.

I didn't.

Then David Williams, engineer and owner of Melrose, mentioned he had a bunch of equipment in his front room that was just sitting there collecting dust.

And that got me thinking, which is a problem for me because of my ailment...Attention Surplus Syndrome. You know the acronym.

I think about things for too long. It's the opposite of ADD.

As my ASS kicked in, I thought...I know a lot of people who have instruments and musical equipment they're not using.

Folks who have old flutes in their closets, guitars in the basement covered in cobwebs, amplifiers in the garage just waiting to be cranked back up to 11.

I thought...why not collect all these instruments and gear and get them in the hands of young people who might want to make some music?

Why not have an instrument drive where people--musicians, producers, civilians, anybody--can donate their unused musical gear and get it into the hands of young folks who might be able to put it to good use?

Maybe we could get a trumpet into the hands of the next Miles Davis. A guitar into the hands of the next Taylor Swift.

Some bagpipes into the hands of a kid who wants to play at funerals.

So I made a New Year's Resolution to do something...

In January, I called the owners of Vicky's who generously offered their parking lot as a drop off spot.

And then my ASS went nuts.

I started thinking...why not do a benefit concert at Vicky's as well? Have a show to raise some dough to get music back into public schools?

I called around and finally got in touch with a guy named Brian McDaniels with the Palm Springs Unified School District. He's a musician and teacher.

He loved the idea. He ran it by PSUSD and they gave it the green light.

So I came up with a plan. The Slim Man Plan!

Here goes...

On Sunday, May 4th, we are doing an instrument drop off at Vicky's from 10 AM to 3 PM.

And from 3 PM to 8 PM we are doing a benefit concert for PSUSD.

I wanted to call the event May the 4th Be With You, but got overruled by people with a lot more sense than I have!

PSUSD came up with a name:

The First Annual Bringing Music To Life Benefit Concert.

I reached out to some amazing artists and asked them to contribute their talents to the concert.

We've got a great lineup! Lisa Lynn Morgan, John Stanley King, Rose Mallett, Will Donato, Keisha D, and a guy named Slim Man.

But I felt like we should include some young musicians from PSUSD. So I asked Brian to put together a band consisting of high school kids to open the show.

Slim People. There are so many moving parts to synch up. And it's just me running this rodeo. It's a tall task for one donkey.

But my ASS is up to it!

So here's the deal...

Tickets are $100. That's right. $100.

You may be asking yourselves, why would anyone pay $100 to see musicians they can see for free any other night of the week?

Because we're trying to help get music back into the schools.

What do you get for $100? Any drinks or food included? Balloons? Funny hats? Noisemakers?

Nope.

You get the immense satisfaction of knowing that you helped get instruments into the hands of some young people who need them.

And you get a wide variety of excellent entertainment!

Tickets and details are on the Slim Site.

There are only 100 tickets available. First come, first seated. Don't worry, you'll have a seat. At a table!

You might be sitting with someone you don't know, but what a great way to make new philanthropic friends!

You can also sit at the bar if you want.

Vicky's will have a limited menu with food for purchase. So you don't need to bring a big bag of chicken McNuggets!

There are also five VIP tables available for $700 each. Six seats per table.

Here is the link for tickets and VIP tables:

If you want to be a sponsor, it's $1000.

What do you get for a thousand buckaroos?

You get your name plastered on all the promos and posters. And you get the warm and fuzzy feeling knowing you helped support music in the schools.

If you want to donate, but can't make it to the concert, here is the link. Any amount is much appreciated!

If you have any musical gear you want to donate, but can't make the drop off at Vicky's on May 4th, you can drop it off or mail it right here:

The Foundation for PSUSD

333 South Farrell Drive

Palm Springs, CA 92262

Monday-Thursday, 10:30 AM-3:30 PM

Starting April 10th

What do I mean by musical gear?

Anything. As long as it's in good condition. If it ain't, get it fixed! Support your local repair person!

They need...trumpets, saxes, any horn instrument, woodwinds, guitars, drums, percussion, keyboards, amps, microphones, recording equipment, mixers, monitors, cables, cords.

And if you have stands, they need those as well. Guitar stands, keyboard stands, sax stands, mic stands, music stands.

Anything and everything musical!

My goal is for us to raise $12,000 for PSUSD.

And deliver a truckload of musical gear to PSUSD the next day.

If you want to donate a piano or two, or if you have a stack of Marshall amps and need help getting them out of the cellar, send me an email:

slim@slimman.com

We'll figure it out!

That's the plan. The Slim Man Plan!

I will keep you posted.

Keep smiling, Slim People.

And keep in touch.

May the 4th Be With You!

It's all about love.

Who loves ya?

Uncle Slimmy

PS: I'm a Sole Man! This is one of my favorite new dishes. Sole with lemon, butter and parsley.

And it won't cost an arm and a leg! Found fresh wild-caught sole at Ralphs (local grocery store) for $10 bucks a pound. She's a-so nice!
