PRP Update: Auto Theft

Having vehicles stolen in our community significantly impacts the safety and well-being of victims and everyone in our community. Peel Regional Police takes this very seriously. We have been increasing the number of officers and expanding investigative resources into our Commercial Auto Crimes Unit, one of the largest in Canada, enhancing our Criminal investigative Bureaus in each of our divisions that serve Brampton and Mississauga, and participating in joint force operations with other law enforcement agencies across Ontario. This has resulted in historical numbers of recovery of stolen vehicles, arrests, and charges of members of organized crime groups.

Peel Regional Police has also been leading the work on identifying solutions to vulnerabilities contributing to auto theft with government officials, auto manufacturers, the insurance industry, and advocacy groups. On March 20th, we will host the 2nd Auto Theft Summit in Peel, in our commitment to tackle auto theft in Peel and across Ontario. We must all work together to stop the organized criminals that are targeting our communities. We have also been raising awareness to make it harder to steal vehicles. We encourage everyone to consider anti-theft devices for vehicles, enhancing security at home through cameras and alarm systems, keeping key fobs away from doorways and entrances, and decreasing visibility to vehicles by parking in garages. For more information, please visit our website here.

PRP Launches Next Generation-911 (NG-911) Services

Peel Regional Police is excited to share that they are the first Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in Canada to officially launch Next Generation-911 (NG-911) services.

The new 9-1-1 system will allow emergency call follow-ups through an automated process, freeing up time for call takers who can focus efforts on actual emergencies. Members of the public who call 9-1-1 accidentally can expect to receive an automated callback with instructions to either acknowledge the misdial or indicate if they have an emergency. Implementing NG-911 will provide communications swiftly and accurately to all first responders. It will also support PRP’s comprehensive and ongoing work towards substantially decreasing wait times in emergency situations.

As a reminder, 911 connects you to emergency services – paramedics, fire, and police – when someone needs emergency medical help or when a fire or a crime is in progress. However, many residents are calling 911 when they should be calling 811, 311, or 211 instead:

·        911 is for life threatening emergencies or crimes in progress.

·        811 answers general health questions and concerns.

·        311 is for local municipal government (city or town) programs and services.

·        211 is for community-based health, social, and government services.

Peel Regional Police Issue Warning over Taxpayer or CRA Related Fraud

Investigators from the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau are urging everyone to be vigilant of all frauds, specifically taxpayer related scams. Fraudsters have created sophisticated deliveries of scams where they pretend to be members of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in hopes of obtaining your personal information, money, and/or identity.

This year’s attacks are more convincing than ever; the communications are more realistic and appear legitimate, using Government of Canada logos. The fraudsters hope you click on the link that directs you to their web page, where they steal your personal information, such as passwords and social insurance numbers. The Canada Revenue Agency will not ask for personal or financial information by email or ask you to click a link that will redirect you. Under no circumstances should you click these links and provide personal information.

If you are unsure, visit the true CRA website at https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency.html or contact them directly. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fraud Bureau at (905) 453–2121, ext. 3335.
