Dog Park Grand Opening This Saturday!  🐾

We're so excited to open District 4's very first dog park! Berryessa residents have waited decades for a playground to take their furry friends, and on Saturday, June 29th we're cutting the ribbon on this beautiful new facility. With large play areas of real grass, benches under the shade of huge trees, water stations, and separate areas for large and small dogs, the Berryessa Dog Park will be a great new community hub for dogs and their owners. Don't miss our grand opening Saturday morning!

Come to the David Cohen table at the event to grab one of these reusable collapsable dog water bowls! (While supplies last.)

Road Safety Improvements in District 4

Exciting news! We’re upgrading the crosswalks at Penitencia Creek/Viceroy with new flashing beacons and adding a pedestrian median island nose for enhanced safety. Construction is in progress and set to be completed late next month. In addition, two new radar speed signs have been installed on Cropley Ave. It’s all part of Vision Zero, San Jose’s plan to make our roads and sidewalks safer for everyone.

SJPD Arrests Suspected Berryessa Arsonist

From NBC Bay Area:

A man was arrested after he allegedly started a fire in San Jose on Tuesday, police say. The incident was one of the many fires that happened in San Jose on Tuesday. One of the fires on Tuesday started along Berryessa Road at around 9 a.m. About two hours later, three larger ones happened near Watson Park and Highway 101. “I saw a bunch of black smoke. It was above this area here, a lot of black smoke," Hannah Tuli of San Jose said.

Police said the call came in as a report of multiple fires being set by someone, an officer found the suspect as they were trying to light another fire. The man was taken into custody.  Investigators are now looking into which fires the man could be connected to. There have been a number of fires in the South Bay this month.

One of the most recent fires happened on Jun.16, when crews put out a vegetation fire near Highway 101 at Oakland Road. Another fire happened Monday near Highway 85 and Santa Teresa. Both fires kicked out lots of smoke, putting firefighters at risk and homes and schools in danger.

Great Community Meet-Up

Yesterday, my staff and I held a meet-up with members of the Berryessa community. We covered many important topics — fire and safety, homelessness, parking issues, and more. These meetings are some of my favorite events as a council member because they give me the chance to hear directly from you. I learned a lot about your concerns and I'm excited to work on addressing them together.

Thank you for your valuable input and for being so engaged and passionate, and special thanks to Araujo's for proving an awesome location and great food for our event!

Jeepney Jam Fun!

Jeepney Jam is an annual tradition that celebrates the Filipino culture, food, and people. Thousands of people came to the Garden at the Flea on Friday. I had a wonderful time browsing the vendors and listening to great music. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the event so special!

Report Illegal Fireworks

Use our online form to report illegal fireworks. Complete the form fully and include as much detail as possible. All reports will be reviewed and if sufficient information is provided, the City’s Code Enforcement Division will issue a warning or citation. Using the online form will not result in enforcement officers being immediately dispatched to the scene. It should not be used to report an emergency. Always call 9-1-1 to report an emergency.

LEAVE FIREWORKS TO THE PROS

All types of fireworks—even those labeled "safe and sane"—are illegal in San José and most of Santa Clara County. San José Municipal Code 10.17.100 states that, except for professional, permitted displays, it is unlawful for any person to possess, store, offer or expose for sale, or use or explode any fireworks.

SPECTATING IS PROHIBITED

San José is now holding spectators responsible for their role in the use of dangerous and illegal fireworks. Any person who is knowingly present and watching a fireworks exhibition is subject to a fine (10.17.105). Individuals who see illegal fireworks being discharged are encouraged to file a report and vacate the area as soon as possible.

Summer Safety

Extremely hot weather can result in heatstroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn, heat rash, and in some instances death. Please take safety measures to stay safe and lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors. If you know of a vulnerable person without air conditioning, such as an elderly or infirm neighbor or someone with a drug or alcohol disorder or severe mental illness, please help them get to an air-conditioned space between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. If you see someone on the street who may be having a life-threatening reaction to the heat, please call 911. Thank you for doing your part to keep people safe during a heat crisis. Santa Clara County Office of Emergency Management has compiled a list of resources including summer safety tips and cooling centers.

Free Junk Pick Up!

We could all use a little extra space around the house this time of year, if you've got junk and clutter in your garage or yard, take advantage of this great FREE service from the City of San José!
