The Lassen Library District’s new sign -photo provided

Lassen District Library Gets New Sign Thanks to Rotary Project

After more than 25-years the Lassen District Library on Main Street has a newly renovated sign, based on the old sign’s design, thanks to a Susanville Rotary project and some dedicated volunteers including Marty Heath from Western Nevada Supply, Morgan Nugent, Rotary Club president and the library district’s first board president Marshall Leve.

Students in Mr. Somerville and Mr. Fike’s classes at Lassen High’s metal and woodshops, along with art students guided by Ms. Weiher, all contributed to the construction and painted background effects.

Western Nevada Supply supplied the metal portion of the sign.

In the early 1990’s Lassen County announced that it would be closing its library service because of a lack of funds, and although county voters did not support a library, Susanville voters created the Susanville Library District.

“The old sign, built with donated specially milled lumber and crafted by the CCC woodworking class, was put in place in 1997 by Rotarians including Mike Kirack on the forklift,” explains Leve.

“The old sign displaying the local mountains with a soaring eagle announced the Susanville Library District. Over time the mountains lost their vibrance, the eagle lost a wing, and the library changed its name.”

“Today and well into the future the Lassen Library District will be recognized by its sign and more importantly for its staff and their service to our community.”

2nd Annual High School Career

Workshop Scheduled for April 8th

5th District Lassen County Supervisor Jason Ingram will be hosting a special Career Opportunities Workshop on April 8th, with a goal of helping local youth better understand the opportunities available here in Lassen County.

This is the second year for the event, which is free to employers, and Ingram will personally set up booths for any employer who is interested in participating. Last year he had more than thirty-five employers and vendors, this year he wants to bring in more than 50.

“I will be providing breakfast and lunch for all of the employers and vendors,” explains Ingram. “The goal of this event is to raise awareness to our youth that there are Career Opportunities right here in Lassen County!”

careerworkshop2024 image

Ingram’s concept is simple and straightforward.

“If we can hire our youth to help fill the job vacancies within the city and county it will be a win-win for everyone! It’s no secret one of our greatest exports is our youth, and I want to break that cycle.”

Ingram added that investing in our youth, in his opinion, is the same as investing in Lassen County’s future.

The workshop will be held at Lassen High School, 1110 Main Street, from 9:00a.m. until 2:45p.m. For more information call Supervisor Ingram at 1.530.249.6431.

Lassen County’s hospital in the 1940’s from the Eastman Collection at UC Davis

New Fee Schedule Given for Hospital

March 22, 1953

Supervisor Lester Coffin stated that the recent increase at the Lassen county hospital on charges from $3.50 to $10 a day would affect few patients.

Coffin said the increase was approved by the supervisors so in case patients who could afford to pay that amount were hospitalized at the county, the charges could be made.

Coffin said the county hospital operated at a large loss each year, and the approval of the increase was made to cut the losses whenever possible.

Figures on the hospital operation show that in 1950-51 the expenditures were $62,729.06 and the revenue only $2,539.08. In 1951-52 the expenses were $66,901.54 and revenue $7,543.17.

The hospital has on average about 45 patients, and of this number, only a small percentage are pay patients.
