This BobBlast addresses how I make neutral colors and why. To make a neutral, mix the two colors opposite each other on the color wheel. Add white (plus maybe a little black) and you have a neutral made of the two opposite colors. I use this neutral as a base color—the first of many layers until the painting is done.
To start… I choose only four colors from my Goof-Proof Color Wheel, using the pointer to determine those colors. I add black and white to this color combination. From there, one of those four colors is my dominant, overall color. Directly across from the Dominant color is the Focal point color. Mixing those two colors will make my neutral. I add white, and perhaps a bit of black to find the shade of neutral I am looking for.
The Color Wheel will show you what’s next. Use it for pointing out a focal point color and two spice colors that are placed next to the focal point color. The painting will clearly have a strong focal point.
I make charts of these neutral color wheel combinations so I don’t have to try to remember how I arrived at the neutrals. Watch the video to view my Neutral Charts and how I mix the colors to make my neutrals.
Why do I like painting with neutral colors? Pure colors are clean and jump out at you when you use them directly out of the tube. Neutrals tend to recede, giving a feeling of being further away, softer or out of focus.
I like a combination of sharp focus and soft focus—hard edges and soft edges. I can direct the viewer’s eye to the focal point by my choice of color and sharp edges. Right now I choose neutrals.
