"Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning." --Ben Franklin
Monthly Eagle Family Newsletter
Your Monthly Message from Principal Herman...
Hello Eagle Families!

I want to call attention to the Benjamin Franklin quote that I used at the top of this month's newsletter. Education is about guided continual growth and progress--guided so that students may learn to motivate themselves as learners throughout their lifetime. We are so thankful here at AHS that you entrust the learning of your student to us. The improvement, achievements and successes from our students are certainly rewarding! Our Eagles do amazing things!

And, in many ways, we're just beginning. With the start of second semester, we have new opportunities to engage students in learning and new chances for them to show the fruits of their hard work. Please continue to let us know how we can partner with you and connect your student with the many opportunities we have to offer to further their future!

As we look at Arlington High School's 20th year and I reflect on the upcoming bond and levies being proposed, I want to throw out a little bit of history as to when our first school came to Arlington:

Once the district was approved (1884), the settlers moved to get their school built. They found 400 acres of land covered with cranberry bogs for lease from J. L. Kent of Kent’s Prairie a mile or so from present-day downtown Arlington. The people of the district paid for Kent Prairie School by subscription. Lumber for the school was cut at a sawmill at Utsalady, loaded into a shovel-nosed canoe, poled up river to Gifford’s Landing, and packed by horses to the prairie. The finished school had split cedar walls and roof, and a fir puncheon floor. It was also the most expensive building in the north county, costing $150.00 to build.

What a world! Thank you for being a part of Arlington School District history!

Reach out to your student's counselor, admin, or teachers if we can help with anything! #ahsflyeaglesfly

Principal - AHS
& Your AHS AP team...Nikki Anderson, Kyle Axelson, and Denise Eichler
Arlington High School (AHS) teacher, Jeff Keeley, has earned his National Board Certification. To become a National Board Certified Teacher, Keeley had to go through a process that included: a content knowledge test; a portfolio of student work that shows students’ growth over time; an in-classroom video and written analysis to demonstrate student interaction skills; and a demonstration of his abilities as an effective and reflective educator. Once an educator becomes certified, it indicates that the educator has met certain benchmarks for the teaching profession.

Keeley has taught social studies at AHS for the past 17 years, including World History, AP European History and AP US History. Keeley earned his certification in December. There are currently 24 National Board Certified Teachers in Arlington Public Schools. Washington state has the third largest group of National Board Certified Teachers in the nation.
Senior Kylie Abbey-Zanni is to be congratulated for being a 2024 J-100 Primary Select. This cadet has been offered a 4-year AFROTC, Type 1 scholarship with a on-campus housing allowance. The scholarship is valued at approximately $250,000.

Kylie is one of only 100 candidates across the nation and throughout 6 countries, 118 units total, to be awarded a full 4-year college scholarship thorough AF ROTC.

CONGRATULATIONS KYLIE!!!

Students showed their knowledge in a variety of ways with our first semester finals. In AP Statistics, students created and conducted their own research studies to examine the effect of bias, look at how to word questions for ideal results, etc. Our Eagles are amazing!

Thank you for always being Eagles at heart, and coming to support our games!

FAFSA/WAFSA
FAFSA is now open!  All students and contributors must have an FSA ID to complete the FAFSA.  It takes 1-3 days for an FSA ID to be verified. For information on how to create an FSA ID and step by step instructions to complete the FAFSA, please visit the Financial Aid page.

WAFSA is open!
The Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) is for people who don’t file a federal FAFSA application. People who complete a WASFA are applying for state aid. There are various reasons to complete a WASFA instead of a FAFSA:
  • A person may not be eligible for federal aid due to:
  • Citizenship or immigration status, including being undocumented.
  • Defaulted federal student loans.
  • Repayments owed on federal grants.
  • A person may choose not to apply for federal aid due to:
  • Family members who do not want to file the FAFSA.
  • Other personal reasons.
AHS Theatre Club presents a night of 80s nostalgia and rockin' dancing. Set to the music of the era, this stage version of the 1984 film will have you wanting to get up and dance yourself! Parental guidance suggested for some references to underage drinking, off-stage violence, and a few cases of strong language. Tickets go on sale February 9th. Please check the AHS website for additional information. Shows are March 1, 2, 8, and 9 at 7pm with an additional matinee performance on March 9 at 1pm.
NEWS YOU CAN USE!
We have had an extremely high volume of LOST AND FOUND items on a weekly basis. Please make sure your student(s) are coming home with all of their belongings - after about a month or so, all lost and found items are donated.
Food Services: You may notice that the portal for making online payments to your student's food service account looks a little different this year. We're now using TouchBase for processing these payments, and if you already have a TouchBase login you're ready to sign in and make payments. If you don't have a login it will take just a few minutes to set it up. Please go to wa-arlington.intouchreceipting.com and follow the instructions to create your password (your username is the same one you use for Skyward Family Access). Automatic payments that were set up in the old system will not carry forward. Online payments are not posted to food service accounts in real time, but they are updated several times throughout the day and should be reflected in the account balance no later than 7:30 am the following day.
Each month, the Equity Department develops themes that focus the equity work for our district. The goal of the monthly theme is to provide resources and supports for teachers in order to bring awareness and appreciation to the diverse population of students in our district.

February's theme is Black History Month. Please click this link to find resources for this month’s theme.

Character Strong - It Takes All of US!
The Family Character Dare of the Month is...

For our teens, our Weekly Character Dare is generally posted in the Commons, but we also share it on social media via @AHSFlyEaglesFly (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) where we have over 6,000 subscribers who can view these dares daily. By working on these dares together and talking about them, we grow closer and more connected. The kids get this opportunity together in Friday's Every Eagle Advisory. The Staff have Weekly Dares too! The more WE do as adults, the more THEY do as kids. Family Dares simply tie it all together... here's Character Strong's C.A.R.E approach! It's a fun, simple approach to building Every Eagle's Commitment, Patience, Humility, Selflessness, Kindness, Respect, Honesty and Forgiveness - traits that lead to success beyond AHS. Enjoy your monthly Family Dares!
