CareCloud: Advice from SCRC's Team of Experts

What unique issues do LGBT caregivers and care receivers face? What should LGBT families consider as they prepare to age in place?

LGBT caregivers and care receivers often confront unique issues in their caregiving situation, ranging from legal and systemic issues to social barriers. LGBT caregivers may face challenges with being legally recognized as the primary caregiver and medical decision-maker, particularly if they do not have the support of their care receiver’s biological family. The historical lack of inclusive policies, support networks and resources tailored to LGBT families can make it particularly stressful to navigate the healthcare system and increase feelings of isolation. Further, LGBT caregivers may encounter discrimination or a lack of understanding from healthcare providers or others who they need support and assistance from. Due to these factors, among others, the financial and emotional burden of navigating a caregiver situation can be uniquely stressful for LGBT caregivers and care receivers.

As LGBT families prepare to age in place, having legal documents in place such as healthcare proxies, powers of attorney and wills, is particularly important to ensure that decision-making authority and inheritance rights are clear and respected. Caregivers can also benefit from assessing the accessibility and inclusivity policies of local healthcare providers and other organizations and services they engage with, to help reduce challenges of potential discrimination and systemic shortfalls. Cultivating a support network within the LGBT community and beyond can be crucial to navigating the many challenges of caregiving.
