March marks Developmental Disability Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges and triumphs of individuals living with developmental disabilities. At PESA, this month holds particular significance as we strive to ensure that students with disabilities receive the support and resources they need to achieve educational success. Katrina Onyekwelu, an Educational Specialist at PESA, embodies this commitment, tirelessly advocating for students and their families to access the educational assistance they deserve.
In her role, Onyekwelu facilitates various requests from families, parents, and the probation department to assist students in receiving their educational rights and academic services. One poignant example underscores the critical nature of her work: a situation where parents requested an assessment for their child. Onyekwelu explained, "Unfortunately, their requests for assessments were ignored by their school district so PESA stepped up and is now assisting the family to ensure that those requests are addressed ". Instead of acknowledging the student's needs through proper assessment, the school opted to place him with a familiar teacher. However, despite familiarity, the student wasn't progressing academically because he was placed in a grade level that wasn't suitable for him.
Onyekwelu emphasized, "At PESA, we have people like me who go in and review all those records to determine where we left off with facilitating the student's assessment, or ensuring that the student is in the appropriate class setting that they need to be in." PESA's role is crucial in offering services that bridge the gap between students and the support they require from their respective schools.
The dedication of professionals like Onyekwelu reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and equity in education. Every student deserves the opportunity to thrive academically, regardless of any developmental disabilities they may have. By advocating for their rights and ensuring access to necessary resources, PESA plays a vital role in empowering students to reach their full potential.
As we observe Developmental Disability Awareness Month, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting students with disabilities and working towards a more inclusive and accessible educational system. Through collective efforts and unwavering advocacy, we can create a brighter future for all students, regardless of their abilities.
