Hello readers!

A few weeks ago, the children’s booksellers in our Saratoga store welcomed a group of local educators to the store for an afternoon of book recommendations. We had so much fun talking about some of our recent favorites, so I thought I’d share some of our suggested favorites with you now.

Beth told us about Wrecker by Carl Hiaasen and The Plot to Kill a Queen by Deborah Hopkinson, two great new novels perfect for kids ages 10 & up. She also talked about two picture books that are big hits with our whole team - Tired Town by Patricia Marx and Roz Chast, and Big Truck Little Island by Chris Van Dusen.

Wildly creative picture books, like Sylvie Daigneault’s The Imaginary Alphabet, David Alvarez’s Ancient Night, and Woven of the World by Katey Howes featured heavily in Emily’s presentation.

Tara talked about the amazing young adult romcom Cafe Con Lychee by Emery Lee, the picture book The Good Hair Day by Christian Trimmer, and the middle reader novel Sir Callie and the Champions of Helston by Esme Symes-Smith.

Saratoga’s amazing web order & school order specialist Cassidy had some favorites to share as well: The Mermaid Moon by Briony May Smith, Once There Was by Kiyash Monsef, All That It Ever Meant by Blessing Musariri, and Misfit Mansion by Kay Davault.

As for me, I got to talk about one of the most imaginative picture books I’ve read in a while - The Museum of Nothing by Steven Guarnaccia, a hilarious book about… well.. nothing.

Whatever the children in your life like to read, our staff of experts probably has a recommendation that will fit them perfectly. Come visit, and let us help you find something great!

Best wishes,

Rachel, Director of Events

Wandering Stars

by Tommy Orange

TIME MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK • The Pulitzer Prize-finalist and author of the breakout bestseller There There ("Pure soaring beauty."The New York Times Book Review) delivers a masterful follow-up to his already classic first novel. Extending his constellation of narratives into the past and future, Tommy Orange traces the legacies of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the Carlisle Indian Industrial School through three generations of a family in a story that is by turns shattering and wondrous.

"Neither prequel nor sequel to his critically-acclaimed previous novel, Tommy Orange's new work is deeply related to the Pulitzer Prize-nominated There There. Starting with the 1864 attack at Sand Creek in southeastern Colorado, Wandering Stars follows one family through the generations from that massacre to present day Oakland just after the tragic events at the powwow that are the centerpiece of There There. Multi-layered and deeply felt, Wandering Stars explores themes of family, identity, addiction and so much more. Another masterpiece from an exceptional writer." — reviewed by Stan Hynds
