Ontario could include student residences to reach housing targets

With residential housing starts falling, Ontario is considering adding student accommodations to its definition of new housing as it works to hit a goal of building 1.5 million new homes by 2031.

Ontario reported 89,297 housing starts last year and boosted the number to 109,011 by including long-term care beds and spaces like basement units.

To meet the 1.5 million goal, the province must build 150,000 homes per year.

Ontario expanding mass timber to 18 storeys

Ontario is expanding the use of advanced wood construction, including mass timber. The province says the move will help build homes faster and reduce costs over time, while supporting jobs in forestry, technology, engineering design and manufacturing. Currently, Ontario’s building code allows encapsulated mass timber construction buildings to be up to 12-storeys tall. The province intends to amend the building code in the coming months to permit encapsulated mass timber construction up to 18 storeys.

Encapsulated mass timber construction offers the same fire and structural protection as other building methods, while supporting renewable forestry resources.

Growth in the non-residential sector was mostly attributed to the industrial component, which rose 57.8 per cent to reach $1.3 billion in February.

Atwill-Morin embraces exoskeletons for heavy lifting

Quebec-based construction company Atwill-Morin has acquired a dozen exoskeletons for its workers to wear on key projects, boosting strength exponentially for tasks requiring heavy lifting and increasing worker safety and productivity.

The lightweight suits are being used on a hotel restoration project in Quebec City, among others, where workers are dismantling half-century-old stone walls and moving the blocks for repair. Use of the exoskeletons, which have a supportive infrastructure relying on springs, has the effect of increasing workers’ strength almost tenfold, reducing around 70 per cent of the load being handled, says the firm.

NSC Releases New Report on Safety Hazards in Crane Industry

While cranes play a vital role in the transportation, construction and agriculture industries, among others, operating this type of equipment can be especially dangerous if proper protocol is not followed. In fact, the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, or CFOI, reported a staggering 297 crane-related deaths between 2011 and 2017. As part of a collaboration with the NCCCO Foundation, and continuing its mission to advance safety in the workplace, the National Safety Council released a new report through its Work to Zero initiative, Understanding the Current State of Safety Hazards in the Crane Industry, highlighting lift-specific risks and best practices employers can adopt to keep workers safe.
