High levels of Benzene (up to
12 x the allowed amount) have recently been found in various Acne Products containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO); Valisure has filed a petition with FDA to recall treatments.
Benzene is a group one carcinogen, similar to asbestos and lead, meaning there is enough evidence to conclude the chemical can cause cancer. Benzene has been found in over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medicine benzoyl peroxide (BPO) containing products.
Is Benzene dangerous and should patients be concerned about using it? “While benzene was found in topical BPO, the long-term effects of this were not studied and it is unclear what impact this might have on the health of users. As we await further data, we are taking precautions to ensure patient safety to the best of our ability and recommend avoiding the use of these products," Dr. Sarah Schram, Mohs Surgeon and Co-Owner of PIma Dermatology, stated.
When looking for skin care products that don’t contain BPO, we advise products containing Salicylic Acid (SA) [like Betaplex or Avene Cleanance Hydra Soothing Cleansing Cream] for acne-prone skin. Products containing Sodium Hypochlorite, are also beneficial for acne-prone skin, like CLn Acne Cleanser (which also contains SA): clnwash.com.
