50th Anniversary 911 Turbo
Photo Porsche
There are countless ways to say fast.
In 1974, we found the fastest.
In a technical advancement that changed the sports car world, in 1974 Porsche introduced the first production turbo engine as part of the 911 lineup. That car’s now famous “whale tail”, a nod not just to form but also to function, a design rooted in aesthetics and physics that offered an iconic companion to the exhilarating power of its revolutionary engine.
Fifty years on, the Turbo variant has become a brand in its own right, proving with every iteration that the dream of a 911 could be taken even further. And to celebrate that remarkable first drive: a 50th Anniversary 911 Turbo, limited to just 1,974 units.
As inherently special as every Turbo model is, this Anniversary model – a brilliant mix of heritage cues along with the cutting-edge design and performance of the 2025 911 Turbo S – will be, dare we say, turbocharged in special. A 50th Anniversary badge on the rear deck and “Turbo 50” stitched in the headrests and adorned on the door sills call out the tribute, while a dashboard plaque announcing the production number certifies each car’s rare place within the Porsche world. MacKenzie Tartan upholstery on the door panels and seat centers draws a bold line to the car’s iconic lineage. Touches of Turbonite, a first for any 911, signal the exclusive club to which this car belongs.
It's a car that inspires imaginations, including that of a watchmaker. And so, a Turbo 50 timepiece, itself a limited edition, is available only to owners of this once-in-a-lifetime sports car.
Due in late 2024, the 911 Turbo 50 Years is available to order now.
A historic moment for a car that made history.

And Saturday October 5, a driving tour will leave El Dorado Hills Town Center and work its way up Salmon Falls Rd, past Coloma, up 193 towards Georgetown, cut across Garden Valley, down to Cool and the American River confluence, before heading back up to cross the Foresthill Bridge enroute to Jim and Linda McMahen’s country residence in Newcastle for an Oktoberfest complete with German faire and libations.
If driving the tour isn’t in the cards, both welcome you to attend just the BBQ or Octoberfest (registration required for head count). See event flyers elsewhere in the Drifter for details. Remember, register early as space limits may apply.

Beat-The-Heat Tour
By Rick Duste
After months of record-breaking Sacramento Valley heat the Club looked forward to heading to the Sierra’s once again and find the cool weather. Emigrant Gap was part way up I-80 and sporting an average August temperature of 82 degrees. Cool air here we come.
Well, you can’t claim false advertising! We got cooler air. 48 degrees and a very rare rainy August day. 25 cars and 40 hardy souls gathered at the Big 5 Sporting Goods parking lot in Lincoln … and made good use of their canopy out front. Three run groups, windshield wipers a wiping, traversed rural roads to join highway 49 in North Auburn, ran north to Wolf Road and made their way to Penn Valley for a restroom stop.
The final leg took us through Rough-and-Ready before joining Highway 20 in Grass Valley. A fun final 25 mile run through light rain and the forests cloaked in mist and clouds proved scenic and peaceful. The weather kept down the normal summer weekend recreation traffic and the locals knew the roads and drove at a good clip. We arrived at the quaint Rustic Table Restaurant and Sierra Woods Lodge for lunch. They reserved the whole restaurant for us so we were able to fit inside and not have to use the outside patio as was planned. The staff worked hard and treated us well. A fun place for you to stop enroute to Truckee or Tahoe on a future trip. Right off I-80.
The club runs on Volunteers. Many thanks to Leads and Sweeps Ray DeLaughder and Lynette Smith, Kent Kaiser, Stefen Hepper (sans his auto-cross tires too boot), Eric and Wendy Boucher, and Rik Larson for stepping up and their expert leadership and management of the groups. And thanks to our always reliable photographer Collin Fat for pictures.

August Autocross Summary
By Collin Fat,
Photos By Collin Fat
| |
Nearly 50 drivers competed at the August 17th autocross event at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, California under clear skies and below average temperatures. With a high of only 83 degrees combined with a light wind of 15 mph, we could not have asked for better weather to race our favorite Porsches. Attendance almost set a record for participation for an August event as temperatures at the track usually average over 100 degrees. As a reference, the July event featured temperatures more than 100 degrees.
More than 17 novices attended the event, and it was a stretch to provide instruction to each driver who requested instruction. Thanks to the efforts of our autocross registrar, Joy Nieslony, she managed to seamlessly pair up the day’s instructors with an eager student. As a point of reference, this was the most students the program has seen for a regular autocross outside of our annual autocross school in March.
Martin Messersmith designed a challenging course which featured an array of connected slaloms highlighted by a loop which each driver had to navigate twice to complete the course. If was challenging not only for our students but the seasoned autocrosser as well. The biggest challenge to getting a good time on course was to determine where to apply the gas and how to enter a turn.
The top time of the day went to Drew Powers with a time of 49.819 followed closed by SVR’s Steve Nieslony with a 50.289. John Leet, 51.418, Preston Lambert, 51.865, and Jason Trantham, 52.310 rounded out the top five finishers. The top ten times are listed below and full results can be found on the SVR website at: https://svr-pcaor.org/wp/autocross-results/

Interesting Cars from the SVR !
By Steve Long
Our PCA Region enjoys nearly 1,000 Members and 600 Co-Members. I’d wager we have more than 1,200 Porsche vehicles in that mix. Of that 1,200 Porsches, what if only ten percent had unique stories to tell? That gives us 120 cars with an interesting past. All of this sounds like ten years of articles for the Drifter. So, here is our first tale!
Every third Thursday, the Sacramento Valley Region has a Porsche ‘n Pints meet up which is organized by John Leet, Vice President and Super-Member, Kent Langendorff. The July event was held at Knee Deep in Auburn with about thirty vehicles in attendance.
Ken Dwelle arrived with his and wife Judy’s early three-gauge 1965 912 Rally Race Car. Yes, those words are correct. I asked Ken to share the car’s story with me and he agreed.
Ken and Judy have owned the car for about three years. He spotted it parked under a tree at Lighthall Classics in Shingle Springs. The Dwelle’s experience with Lighthall Classics was due to 356 body and chassis work being done there.
Ken did not know the entire history of the car, although it appears to have begun its journey as a stock Bahama yellow car in New Jersey.
For me, things really get interesting when it was converted to a rally car and started its racing career at the revived “La Carrera Panamericana” in Mexico circa 2002. The La Carrera sounds similar to the Time Speed Distance (TSD) Rallies that we run in our club today.
The car ran two unsuccessful race attempts by a New Jersey based team due to oil temperature issues from parts being installed incorrectly.
For the 2005 race, Eric Huber located the car, and it was brought to California. It ended up being owned by John Shaffer, Jr. Driving and navigating duties rotated through John, Eric, John Schaffer Sr. (“The Elder”), Shannon Criss and Mark Fox. The team’s names adorn both doors.
This third time in was the charm. All it took to be competitive and finish was to run the car off a dirt road and down a steep hill during the race. It flew for a bit. The car survived the drama and was pulled up by friendly Mexican Nationals with a tow truck and driven to the overnight checkpoint.
The team spent all night trying to get the car straight. Luckily, the leading British team in their class had a great body man who stepped in and managed to use chains and a “come-along” to pull the car straight and make needed welding patches. The car was ready to get back into the fray!
After starting three hours late, they managed to finish third in their class. At one point in the race the car was bombing along at 90 mph… and sadly passed by a local in a pickup without effort. I bet driving the underpowered 912 was still more fun though!
Post race, the car came back to Sacramento and was then parked for about fifteen years before Lighthalls Classics bought it from John. Sadly, the car had been exposed to the weather enough to take in water. Luckily that original block survived sans a few parts. The car currently runs on a race spare motor from a 1967 356 that John’s team sourced.
The car sports its race livery, its racing components and even its original rally computer. The Dwelle’s also are fortune enough to have much of the race paraphernalia for the car including a fire suit, photos from the off-road excursion and the finish line snap shots.
Thanks to Ken and Judy Dwelle for sharing their car story with us. I hope you enjoy this brief history of a car with a past as much as I do. Photo credits to Ken Dwelle.
There is a tribute to Shannon Criss here which includes some fun photos from the 2005 effort. https://www.southbayriders.com/forums/threads/96414/page-4
If you would like to share the story of your car, please email me at membership@svr-pca.org . Your car might have a different story. Maybe it was a basket case that you brought back to life. Maybe it was the car you took your spouse out for a first date. Maybe it’s been in the family for three generations. I’m open to any stories that broaden the appreciation of the great Porsche cars in our region.
Remember, the club is only as good as we make it!!
