Shah Jehan and Mumtaz Mahal

These two miniature portraits by unidentified artists depict Emperor Shah Jehan (1592–1666), the fifth Mughal Emperor of India from 1628 to 1658, and his wife, Empress Mumtaz Mahal (1593–1631). Emperor Jehan erected the Taj Mahal at Agra as a tomb for his wife. The portraits are watercolor on ivory, set all over with red garnets.
