Your Support is Requested to Restore NJ State Funding to Salem Community College

Why N.J.’s community colleges need full funding

Governor Murphy’s proposed budget drastically reduces critical state investment in New Jersey’s community colleges, cutting $20 million from this vital sector of higher education. The following Q&A with New Jersey Council of County Colleges President Aaron Fichtner, ran in the South Jersey Times on April 1, outlining the importance of community colleges:

May 4 Salem County Historical Society's Open House Tour of Fenwick's Colonly 2024

Salem County Historical Society’s Open House Tour in Fenwick’s Colony 2024

The Salem County Historical Society is pleased to announce that the Open House in Fenwick’s Colony, our popular spring open house tour, will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm at historical sites around Salem County.

The 2024 Open House Tour will highlight colonial homes and historic sites of Salem County, many located in Salem City, Hancocks Bridge, Alloway, and Woodstown. Several houses on the tour are examples of unique regional pattern brick architecture of the 18th century, colonial-era houses of worship, and sites connected with Salem County’s founder, John Fenwick.

Visitors can tour several 18th-century brick houses, including this year's featured home, the Gideon Scull House (built c. 1740/1820) in Salem City. Be sure to visit this historic treasure, which is now open for the tour for the first time in many years.

Pattern brick enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to tour the Hancock House (built 1734), the James Barrett House (built c.1735), and the John Dickinson House (built 1754), the most ornate patterned-brick house in the United States. The oldest house on the tour is the Samuel Shivers House in Woodstown, reportedly dating back to 1669 when it served as a trading post and tavern, a few years before John Fenwick founded the colony at Salem in 1675.

In addition to private homes, several old houses of worship, including three Quaker meeting houses in Woodstown, Salem, and Hancocks Bridge. Many of the original settlers of Salem County were members of the Religious Society of Friends, and two of these colonial brick meeting houses are still regularly used. Other local historical societies that will be open for the tour include the Alexander Grant House (built 1690/1721)—home of the Salem County Historical Society; the Samuel Dickeson House (built 1749)—home of the Pilesgrove-Woodstown Historical Society; and the Alloway History Museum.

Another featured home is the Goodwin Sisters House (built 1821). The Goodwin Sisters House is recognized as a confirmed Underground Railroad Station; it was the home of Quaker abolitionist sisters Abigail Goodwin and Elizabeth Goodwin.

Tour participants will visit 24 private homes, sites, and gardens in Salem County, convenient to Route 55, the Delaware Memorial Bridge, Route 295, and the NJ Turnpike.

Tickets may be purchased before the tour on the Salem County Historical Society's website, www.salemcountyhistoricalsociety.com. On the day of the tour (and before the tour), tickets may be purchased at the Salem County Historical Society in Salem City.

Please mark your calendars for May 4th and join us as we celebrate the Society’s 140th Anniversary and the colonial heritage in Salem County! Contact the Society at (856) 935-5004 or adminassist@salemcountyhistoricalsociety.com. Please also visit our Facebook & Instagram to enjoy special tour previews. Thank you, and we hope to see you in May!
