Government Affairs Update

SB 1103 Clears Assembly Judiciary Committee

Just a week remains until the Legislature adjourns for summer recess, with next Wednesday serving as the last day for policy committees to meet and report bills. With the deadline quickly approaching, your advocates in Sacramento have testified on numerous bills with potential impact to our industry.

Yesterday, Senior Director of Government Relations Skyler Wonnacott served as the primary opposition to Senate Bill 1103 (Menjivar; D-Van Nuys) in the Assembly Judiciary Committee meeting. The bill, which would impose detrimental commercial lease mandates, ultimately passed with a vote of 7-2, despite multiple lawmakers raising concerns with the legislation and two democrats abstaining from the vote. We will continue to advocate against this bill in the Assembly due to the negative impact it will have on the commercial real estate industry.

The California Constitution mandates that the governor provide an annual report to the state Legislature detailing the state’s condition. The update discussed the state's efforts on homelessness, border security, reproductive rights, and more. Shortly after the speech was released, Republican lawmakers held a press conference in response.
